205 GTI - best place to buy?
Discussion
I quite fancy a 205GTI as a third car as I've always fancied one.
Where's the best place to buy one from, hopefully requiring the least mechanical work/a refurbished one? Are these people any good?

(I konw LAD Motorsport refurbished GTIs but spoken to a couple of people who were wary about using them.)
How easy are they to maintain/service and any advice for buying very welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Just GTi's charge a fortune but they're usually good cars.
LAD are very optimistic.
Ebay and registering on www.205gtidrivers.com is your best bet.

JustGTI's and LAD are both worth steering clear of. JustGTI's are overpriced and the workmanship is poor. LAD's GTI is expensive and the power gains are wildly estimated.
Like Olber said it's best to register on 205gtidrivers although I know at the moment they aren't taking any new members whilst the DB is being cleared up.
There is a lovely 1.6GTI up for sale at £3500 at the moment, expensive but fully restored.

The thing you have to be careful of is certain so called specialists don't really do anything to the car other than cosmetic stuff to make the car look better than it really is.
I recall seeing a few 205's at one of the mentioned 'specialists' and to be frank, whilst they looked very nice from about 3 or 4 metres away, once you started looking deeper - they were abused, neglected examples. In fact, even if you knocked a 0 off all the prices, I would've still walked away.
The interesting thing is that about 2 years later I looked at a private 1.9 advertised near HORSHAM. I spoke to the owner who was a real nice, genuine chap. I asked him over the phone if the car had any smashes, etc, and he said no.. blah, blah, blah.... well, I went round to look at it and yes it looked mint on face value, but when I looked under it the front it had been involved in a major smash. The inner wings were all over the place and to me, it looked like one of the front legs was out of line.
When I asked him if he'd bought it pivately, he said no he had bought it from a local specialist that refurbs them to 'as new'. I said to him, it wasn't ......... was it? to which he obviously said yes to.
When I showed the seller and his dad the stuff that I had found, his dad went mental and wanted to go round there and burn the place down (for all I know). A painful expensive lesson for the poor guy.

Well that wont be me, the white car i have advertised i have owned for 18 months, the car is what the photo's show a great example of a 1.6 gti.I recall seeing a few 205's at one of the mentioned 'specialists' and to be frank, whilst they looked very nice from about 3 or 4 metres away, once you started looking deeper - they were abused, neglected examples.
