Hi All,

Tried general but nothing - how can noone care about Lagunas????

Anyone know anything about these cars? The old folks have had an old Laguna diesel up to 125k miles and liked the fact it was comfy, economical and they didn't care about getting dents.

They are therefore thinking about one of the Laguna II cars, in particular a 1.9dci expression that is available locally to them. Anything to watch out for? The car is £3.5k for 50k miles which seems pretty cheap. I don't even seem to be able to find power/economy numbers!

OR what else should they get. 'Fun' not important (puma there as other car which is enough for them), economy, ease of drive, some space and so on (BOREDOM) is!

Cheers!

From personal experience I would give the Laguna 2 a wide berth.
My sister had one for a couple of years. EGR valve caused problems twice. Both rear suspension arm bushes had to be replaced. Car had only done 60000 miles.
If you check out the Renault owners forum, you will find a whole tale of woe from Launa owners.
Shame really as they drive really well. Very comfortable and pretty responsive.

weve been running renaults in the family for about 10 years now clios meganes lagunas etc and the more toys the have the more probelms you get, they are very good cars when running well but they suffer from too many electical probelms watch out for egr/gearbox and turbo probelms on the dci laguna the 1.9 was better than the 2.2 though

Thankyou all - I'll bear this in mind. Trying to steer them towards a Mundano or Focus at the moment (just as boring, i know, more reliable though). Any experiences are much appreciated

Kind regards,

Alec

Every car out there has its issues, i have a laguna II and apart from tyres etc never missed a beat, it is the 2.0 ide engine, just done a long journey and it averaged 35+mpg, cant moan and it has all the toys being the initiale model, great car for little money.

Get it bought.

We've had our Laguna for about two years now. It's a 1.9dCi Extreme. While it looks quite nice (black with 17" wheels), it has very little in the way of electronic gizmos (ie. simply has trip computer, CD player, air con., etc - no tyre pressure monitors and whatnot). This, in addition to the fact that's it's a facelifted version, probably helps with the reliability.

Touch wood, so far so good. I've only been able to drive it for a limited amount of time when on holiday, but I've really enjoyed driving it. The steering is a little bit on the numb side, but there's a reassuring weight to it. There is turbo lag, but, I must confess, I quite like it. For example, on our last holiday, there was a slow left-hand corner, which led to an incline, which I'd take in third. Coming out of the corner I'd ease on the throttle, which would be accompanied by a mild boomy diesel noise, but then the turbo would spool up and I'd go up the hill quicker than initially thought. So, it can get moving pretty well when asked.

I've also found it to be damped quite well. On aforementioned holiday, the roads had very rough patches and regular potholes. When I managed to overlook the odd one, yes, there was a thud, but the car was also very forgiving.

It smoothly flows through corners, and the sports seats in our Laguna keep you nice 'n' snug, but they're also comfy on long journeys (though the top back support could be better in front passenger seat, apparently).

You mentioned performance figures - I think it's as follows (I jotted them down when we got the car): 0-62 is over and done with in 10.2 secs, top speed is 127mph, you get there with 128bhp and 221lb/ft of torque (though the figure 236lb/ft is in my head for some reason). It's also a relatively light car.

Before we bought this Laguna, we had a Mk1 Laguna. As you said, brilliant on long journeys. Ours was a 2litre petrol - I miss the noise it made. Also, the boot was a decent and practical space and shape. It's smaller in the Laguna we have now, however, with seats folded down, we did manage to take the old bath to the tip in it the other week.

Yes, I do have a certain brand bias, but I do like the Laguna.

Regards,
Peter

Hello Peter,

Many thanks for your reply. It's always hard to tell when researching a vehicle whether what you read is representative of the model, or just the inevitable complains of the odd dud.

The hunt is on to find one!

Kind regards

DS

I'm glad I was able to help. I'm in no way experienced in buying cars, nor knowledgeable of what to look out for with Lagunas, but I'd say it's worth finding a facelifted one. I'd hope that Renault would have ironed out any problems with the later models. It's a shame that a decent car was plagued with such poor reliablity in its early days.

A quick bit of extra information - yesterday (Monday) my dad and I drove down to Cheshire and back (to have a look around Jodrell Bank). The driving was almost all motorway (speed of 70...there is the possibility that I may have gone over...but not going to incriminate myself, so I don't think I did go above 70...not once) and country driving at each end. The journey was 138.5 miles, and I managed 56.5mpg. We also had the air con on on the return trip.

There may be better cars out there, but we all have different tastes! Anyway, best of look with finding a decent one.

Peter
