Hi guys, just brought a gti6 gearbox on eBay because it was going cheap, looking to fit it to my 1.9 8v, got some questions as usual...

1) it's not got a diff but I have a spare 1.9 box, can I put the 1.9 diff on the gti6 box?
2) been told I need to change a drive shaft for a gti6 one, which side? Guessing near side?
3) other than increase top speed potential, what is it going to do to acceleration etc...
4) is there anything else that's going to bite me in the arse that I should know?

I'll get on drivers later but like to spread my bets for advice.

Cheers guys

Just seen how misleading the title is, sorry...

Check out 306gti6.com - I think a couple of people on there have done similar conversions or are familiar enough with the mechanics of the specific engines and 'boxes to help you out.

best go to drivers>> http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/

I believe if fitted it gives a bad turning circle? However best to get advice on the sites mentioned.

Hey, another 205 driver in Southampton? We shall have to meet up and discuss ropey old French hatchbacks.

I have seen the 6 speed box conversion done, but it really limits turning circle as it sticks out into the left hand side wheel arch. I was on a trackday with a bloke who had it done and he had to get new wheels, space them out and make some sort of crazy linkage just to get enough lock on to get it around the track, let alone for parking etc.

I'm also not entirely sure it will increase top speed potential. I think the top ratio is not far off the top of a 1.9 BE3 'box, but obviously it gives you more increments.

When most people do the GTI-6 engine conversion, they leave the 'box behind. Too much hassle for very little benefit. Might have been why you got it cheap!
