307cc exhaust plumage

Quite heasvy/noticeable fumes from the exhaust on my wifes 307cc.2.0 petrol 04plate
Oil is clean,fumes are clean also, held a cloth to exhaust and nothing other than gases coming out so no leaks into exhaust from oil don't think..
Anything else I could check??
May be running rich? ONly had it 10days but getting mid30mpg so that seems ok.
(had a rich running alfa giving 16mpg!!)
Any help appreciated. Hopefully we haven't bought a bad one
