Why does the Xantia and i think the BX have the handbrake on the front wheels?

Me and a few colleagues have pondered this but cannot think of a good reason.

Cheers

No good reason, just French perversity.

Not quite!

It's on the front on all Hydropneumatically sprung Cit's because the rear suspension operate on trailing arms which rotate as the cars rise and fall.
If you raise one up in the air, then drop the suspension, you'll see the rear wheel move position slightly and rotate slightly aswell. With a fixed brake on that wheel, the car wouldn't be able to rise and fall as the brake would be holding it in the air. And with a car that rises and falls for maintainance, or even when it's just switched off, this would be a problem!

Don't know if you've got one, but if you have start it up on low, select high and hold the brake pedal. When it starts creaking, let go and the rear will nearly jump off the ground!

(Can't be sure it won't damage it somehow, but it'll blow something to let you know if it's not happy!)

Or a more safe way is next time you pick someone up, hold the brakes as they get in. Then once they're in, door shut etc, release the brake and the back end will sink afterwards. Doesn't affect the front as the struts only go laterally up and down, hence why the handbrake is on those wheels.

I must admit I hadn't thought of that, and I agree, they use front handbrakes because of the perverse suspension.

Cheers,

I do have a xantia but im a bit vary of trying to make her jump. The suspension has a mind of its own at the best of times. Raises and lowers at traffic lights (think that's normal) but also on a motorway it decides it wants to go into high rider position randomly which in turn means the brakes are less than wonderful for a few seconds smile

still love it for bangernomics though.

Get under it and feed grease into the height correector swivels and then work it from low to full height a few times ,then repeat every time before you turn it off for a week, that should free it up.

God she looks so much better on the new deep dish rims!

Forgot about the randomness of the brakes and suspension, maybe taking her round the ring on the way home might not be so clever...
