Hello,

I'm currently looking for a car to complement my motorbike, preferably something comfortable, reliable and cheap to run. I was considering getting a 406 diesel. Are they reliable and are there any common problems with them? Are there decent performance or mpg gains from chipping?

Thanks in advance.

(BTW I am in Germany where diesel is cheaper than petrol so would be saving fuelwise from the very first mile)

If its a later model make sure all the electrics work well as they can be flaky.

Suspension drop links are a common failure but cheap to put right.

As long as its had regular fuel changes it will go on forever smile

Thanks for the replies, minicab would probably work out cheaper but just want to have a car of my own finally.

I guess for the electronics it is just a matter of flicking everything on and off and trying everything to check it's all working?

The earlier shape ones seem to be a lot more reliable than the later phase 2's. With the diesels, the 1.9's and 2.1's are supposedly very reliable (I've currently got a 2.1 myself, only had it 3 months so can't judge on reliability yet), and the 2.1 can be remapped to 140bhp for about £250. I seem to be getting 40+ MPG from mine, so can't be too bad.

weve had a 2.1TD for 7odd years and never had any relibilty problems, although of the last year the battrey light is reguarly on, never bothered to look for the fault as the car seams to work fine.
