I've got a '97 1.6 8v 106XS, and was just wondering what the differences were between it and its bigger bro the 1.6 16v GTi? On paper I believe the XS is about 90bhp (or is it 100? I've got conflicting sources!), whereas the GTi is about 118bhp? Is there much else between them aside from the wheels & flaired arches? Cheers smile

I believe it's body kit, wheels, interior, engine, suspension and brakes. So basically everything.

I think you mean the XSI.

There originally was a 1.3 XSI which churned out about 103bhp
Then they brought out the 1.6XSI which churned out about 106bhp

Nope and Nope. The Saxo Vtr was 90 and then 100bhp when they introduced the later silver rocker cover version. I think the 106 XS followed this same pattern in its series 2 life (not sure about the 100 bhp version), whilst there was a 1.4 75bhp version in the S1 shape. I think it would be the same/similar to the Vtr mechanically, but there is less flashy bodywork. I fancied a S2 XS as my first car but ended up with a 306. And the 1.3 XSI was a 1.4. the 1.3 was the Rallye.

It's not, the S2 Rallye is the equivalent of the VTR, albeit with more power and no toys. The XS uses the 90 bhp black top VTR engine and lacks the sportier supension and brakes that the VTR/VTS/Gti and Rallye have.

so i was right about the engine as you say the vtr started with the 90bhp engine, i thought the vtr engines were the same (aside from colour on cover) with map differences.

The XS was 8v, and the gti was 16v. The only other changes were the wheel arches, and maybe the fog lights, but some XS's had the round fog lights too.

Sorry engine wise you're right, there's a bit more between the black and silver tops than colour. silver tops have roller rockers and a few other differences.

I'm pretty sure the XS doesn't have the sportier suspension and brakes that the VTR/VTS/Rallye and Gti have. It wont have the round fog lights either as they are unique to the Rallye/Quiksilver/Gti bumpers that match the arches.
