306 electrical issue

Any help much appreciated.
I have a 2000 "W" 306 1.4 petrol. Recently it has developed a bit of a blip.
The temp gauge is running between 3/4 and the red, even though the car is not overheating. The bizarre thing is that when you load the electrics (lights on, stereo etc.) the temperature rises. This is even to the extent that the gauge flicks up and down when the indicators are on.
Coupled to this the fans were turning themselves on and off for 2 hours the other night whilst the car was sat on the drive. I ended up pulling the fuse so that i didn't end up with a flat battery.
I have had a quick look online and get the feeling that it could be an earth issue. Anyone any experience and give me an idea of where to find the earths etc.?

Your best off asking that question on www.306gti6.com or www.pug306.net, they have MANY sections for eleccy problems. Mines cursed with them as well the most annoying one is the rev counter dies lol
