Clio 172 gearboxes ?.
Discussion
To be fair Hewlett you are the first I've met who's broke the gearbox in one It has been you driving it for those 140k miles
I would'nt say it was particularly common place from my experience of hanging around the cliosport.net forum/club for a year or so. I know EVO flagged it up as a weak point in a buying guide they did.
ETA - I have an '02 172 Cup on 65k still on its original 'box Did have a lady owner for the first half of its miles, me since from where on its been driven hard regularly.

mine has 105k on it and i had the box rebuilt a year ago. in fairness thats a bit strong as it really only needed 3rd gear and the syncro ring, but i replaced the other syncros too. the problem is that the syncros wear as the boxes do get enthuistaic and dare i say it unsympathatic use, but changing them is a bit of a pain (Check out how much renault charge for a clutch change) you might get a 2nd hand box for the price of the rebuild or cheaper but you will never know its reliability, also try to always use the elf oil in them as it works better in my experience.
