Peugeot 305 1.9 diesel (xud engine) VERY noisy.

I am really pulling at straws here hence my first post ....
I have been given a 309 Diesel and has been running fine. I park up, go to tescos for a spot of shopping. Jump back in, start her up and it's now NOISY AS HELL!!!
Strange thing is, it's no different to the ordinary diesel noise, just amplified! It still drives fine but now it sounds like a transit van.
What could this be? - It's a J Reg and has done 150,000

When the XUD engines aren't completely warmed up they are very noisy I find. But if it is abnormally noisy it could be due an oil and filter change? Does make a big difference I find.
If it is severly noisy it could need re-timing, as this is known to make an xud sound like transit. Or air may be getting in the fuel lines causing poor running. It might be worth checking these things out.
