Ok this ones a bit weird just wanted to confirm what I think it is.

Since owning the 172 (its came with new tires) there has been a very little hum whilst on the road but off late it has been getting a lot louder. My tires are nearly ready for changing (gets ready to faint at the prices) so my thinking is the hum is to do with the tires being worn is this correct?

Just to let you know the cars going in the garage today to find out whats the problem.

Tires still have a lot of wear left on them so its not that. Noise is now louder than the engine note. Also when going round right hand corners it stops totaly.

Had something similar on my Saab for the last 2 years.

I was convinced it was a rear wheel bearing.

The garage said it was more likely tread block noise from the half worn tyres (Michelins in my case).

Changed the tyres 3 weeks ago as one had a chunk out of it and they were showing signs of their age even though not worn out in terms of tread depth.

The noise has completely gone, much to my surprise.

Of course that does not mean to say you have the same problem and the same solution.

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me.If its a front wheel bearing you can check this by jacking it up on one side so the wheel is off the floor, sticking it in 2nd and running it up to 50mph on the speedo ,then dip the clutch and listen for the noise. If it doesn't do it try the procedure on the other side. But not if you have a LSD.
