Oil cooler probs

hi ive got a 1.9gti, was having a bit of a problem with the sh*tty copper tubing leading to the oil cooler, i know its best to have it but has anyone taken the oil cooler off along with the piping and sandwhich plate (the bit behind the oil filter)?
a mate of mine says you can do this but im not sure if he's talking out his arse

could you not just re plumb it with a decent oil cooler like mocal. i no it costs money but it was proberly put there for a reason

could do to be honest, i got a different set of hoses which are the rubber ones instead of copper, got quoted £50+vat for a 13 row oil cooler and with tax and mot looming in a black cloud overhead moneys tite.

does anyone have a spare oil cooler? its a 13 row oil cooler with connections on the oil cooler which have a chamfer INWARDS not outwards as theres 2 types

1.6 GTIs don't have 'em and are fine (and there really isn't very much in it performance wise). From what I've read the coolers don't really do a lot anyway as they're small and restrictive and generally quite crap.

I know of plenty of MI16s that have had the coolers removed and they cope fine too.

Yeah, my mildly tweaked 1.9 is running fine without it. It leaked when I put the engine back in so I just threw it out (on advice from the 205GtiDrivers forum) and never had a problem.
