Ok, well I'm very interested in buying a Clio 197, and have driven one this morning and really liked it. However the test-drive didn't get off to the best start when 'ERROR' displayed on the digital display in big letters, to which the salesman said 'errr, not sure why it's doing that'!

Obviously I was quite concerned by this as its only done 7000 miles. So is there anything else that I need to know about them, things to look out for before I part with my cash? It looks in great condition inside and out, but I'v never really taken much interest in renaults before so I know very little about them!

Also, he said they really like being run on high-octane fuels, is that right, is there really noticeable difference?

Any help would be great!

Never seen that before on either of our 2 197's.

We have done over 20k miles in 13 months in 2 197's and only once have we had a problem where the 2nd car went into limp home mode at 4k miles.

No idea what it was and there was no fault recorded by the ECU.

We run our 197 like most people on Super Unleaded and my view is having driven a demo car run on 95 ron, I would not run ours on it as there is a difference.

Well, I have done it, today I brought the car I test-drove yesterday. Not too worried about the 'error' message as it will be put right before I collect it. Can't wait to pick it up!

Catherine, thanks for your reply, it does seem like high-octane fuels are the way to go then. I think this car is going to be expensive to run after the trusty Focus!

Congratulations.

I used to get 33/35 mpg out of my 1.6 Focus.

The Clio does 29/30 mpg, so you will spend more, but it shouldn't be a massive difference.

My first tank of fuel averaged at 28.2MPG. That was a combination of B-roads and motorways. I guess I will learn to get a few more miles off a tank if I want to wink
