I have owned a 172 cup for a week now and it is probably the best thing I have ever bought. Im not too familiar with modding cars, but the first things I'm thinking of are a decat pipe and new air filter/induction kit.

http://www.k-tecracing.com/catalogue.asp?app=Clio%... has a 'CLIO 172 STRAIGHT THROUGH DE CAT PIPE' - would that be any good?

On the same site:
http://www.k-tecracing.com/catalogue.asp?app=Clio%... has a 'KTR PANEL FILTER FOR 172/Cup/182' - is that a cheap option or would it be better to spend more and get better?

I'm not getting into the whole 172/ctr debate as like them both but a few mods to give my brother in his ctr a run for his money would be nice.
Any other reccomendations/suggestions would be appreciated, cheers.

OK first off, you'll give your brothers CTR a run for its money without any mods. On the road the cars are evenly matched.

Decat pipe - its only a length of pipe really so I imagine there is very little to choose between different manufacturers! Popular mod. I have a K-tec sports cat as I did'nt want the hassle of changing it every year for the MOT.

Panel filter - I have an ITG panel which I bought from K-tec as it happens. Don't think they offered their own back then. Again I can't see there being much difference. ITG panels seem to be most popular, thats why I chose it. You won't get great gains from any induction mods to a 172. General concensus is the ITG Maxogen induction kit is the best, but then it costs circa £300 new which is silly money IMO.

Have a read on cliosport.net - everything to do with 172s' has been discussed many many times on there smile

ETA - as first modifications you have the right idea. This is what most owners do, perhaps with a cat-back exhaust system too. This is about as far as I've gone (see my profile for full story). You're not going to see great gains in power, but it will sound better and throttle responce will be sharper.
