I think I paid about £500 from main dealer, but there was other work done on the car at the same time so the labour price might not have been as much

Where are you based? Plenty of specialists that can do it under 700

Ipswich.

Yeah found a few now. My wife is in the motor trade so she knows which garages are good and so forth. Phoned round a few she told me to do and came up with 3 that will do it for under 400. Final bloke I have booked with is doing the 2 belts and water pump for 250. So all in all not bad just was a little worried to start off with :P

Make sure they have the correct renault tools for the job, unless heavily discounted, £250 seems too cheap. If you car has aircon, the cambelt is an absolute pig of a job to do, lots of labour involved.

It's an expensive job that and very labour-intensive. Normally in the region of £500. As others have said, there are plenty of good Renault specialists around who are significantly cheaper then the Stealers.

Every 5 years or 72k. Aux belt should be changed on 36k service.

Yeah it's often the case on the RS Clios that the aux belt will let go if not changed at the correct intervals, and take out the cam belt in the process!

Off topic I know but what about the 197's, what is the cam belt change interval on them? Is it as expensive as the 172's?

Its not wink

As it happens mine got changed early too. But only because I realised at 48k service my aux belt had'nt been changed on 36k (previous owner) and got paranoid it would let go if I left it until 5 year mark. So as the car was over 4 years old anyway it made sense to do the cambelt then. (Maybe this happened with your car? was the cambelt changed by the previous owner?)

I've highlighted the bold section as that is key. For some reason (stupidity?) Renault dealerships have habit of doing this. I think they confuse the service schedule of non-RS Clios' (which leave the aux belt until 5yr/72k IIRC). It happens quite a lot. The consequence of the aux belt snapping is it can take the cambelt with it eek
