Only driven the 306, but it was ace. Engine note to die for, and fast as hell!

However, the Clio is supposed to be good too!

As you can see, I'm tons of help!

306 values are already pretty low because of age and the same concerns that have hit the car market generally. However, none of the GTi-6s were registered recently enough to be affected by the much-touted VED changes.

If you haven't already done so, check out 306 GTi 6 owners club for buyers guide and some for sale

A few people on 306gti6.com who have had both, or at least a Clio 172/182 variant.

I think the general consensus is that taste will drive it all, since there really isn't much in it performance/handling wise.

GTi6 will be cheaper to run though, lower VED, lower depreciation, cheaper tyres etc... not sure on insurance though, for some young people it's quite steep!

I say GTi6, because cheap is always better... get a late style one (1999>2001) in a good colour and they are as nice inside and out as the Clio's (imho) smile

Ive got a 306 GTi-6

I absolutley love it.

I have driven a 172 and didnt think muh compared.

Not any faster, not any better handling, and throw more money at the 306 and get 280bhp smile

182 is probably a little easier to handle on the boil.
306 has a good chassis is good but know to bite hard when it does (lift off oversteer). Mate wrote one off recently for this exact reason...

Close call, I would probably go for the 182 though personally.

Having owned both, my thoughts. The Peugeot is more fun, by a fair distance if you're comfrotable with the oversteer. When you learn to exploit it, it gives you more handling options than the clio. In a straight line, very little in it, but the clio will grip harder. Clio has by far the better cabin and equipment, and will be more reliable. As a weekend car I'd take the 306, for everyay use the Clio. Personally, having owned 2 clio 172's ph2, a 182cup, a Trophy, and now a ph1 172, I'd go for a looked after 172 (ph1 or 2) over a 182. The 182 isn't significantly better than the 172 given the price difference. I just picked up a ph1 172, 50k miles for 2.5k. Total once I've had the clutch changed and coilovers fitted will be under 4k, and it will be quicker than a 182 (lighter) and handle better. Cable throttle (so better response), same basic engine, same brakes etc, just under half the price.

I'm biased...But the clio wins everytime. IMO the GTI-6 isn't even a hot hatch! It's a bit wet...It's not as fast, handle as well or sound as good as the owners make out...Did a bak to bak at knockhill and 182 was much more fun imo...I was however impressed with the wee 106 Rallye..But thats off topic.

Drive them both and then decide, thats the sensible non biased advice i would offer.
