Is a 205 1.9 Gti a wise choice for the 'under 2000cc' class for my local track open saloon series?

The class is currently populated with Hondas and a Clio 182, would I stand a chance if I chucked some cash at it?

In a word, no. A standard clio 182 would walk all over a standard 1.9 GTI. Depends what modifications you're allowed though, although the 8v 205 engines aren't the easiest of engines to get extra power from.

A 306 GTI6/ Rallye would be a better starting point if you can budget for one.

Depends on whether or not you are allowed to go with a 16v engine. Some series allow it, others don't. The 8v can produce up to 225bhp but is a costly route to go.

im sorry but a cammed 1.6 gti beat a clio 182 round castle coombe circuit, through the corners and the straight it could not even come close to over taking my mates 1.6 gti 205

The Clio was evidently driven by a moron then.

Don't get me wrong, I love 205s, but they're not fast cars. My old Mondeo's a much faster and more capable car than my 1.6 GTi, in a straight line and through the corners. But in terms of driver enjoyment there's no comparison, the 205 is infinitely more enjoyable than every other car I've driven.

Yeah, track day antics are never the best way to compare cars. Last day that i went on I overtook a Porsche in my 207 - and I'm Captain Slow!

are guys mad ive owned a 205 gti and now i have a 206 180 there is no way the 205 will be able to cut it against clio 182s and the like. a 205 is one of the best handling cars i have ever driven but its no way the fastest round a corner not by todays standerds anyway.

That depends entirely on the spec of the 205. My 205 would eat a 182 alive round a track
and most 'standard' Mi'd 205s would give a 182 a run for its money.

Yep, but a well modified 182 would eat your 205 alive...

Clio 182 is about 167bhp/tonne
205 mi16 is about 191bhp/tonne
205 1.9 8v is about 155bhp/tonne

Well then if the mi16 was cammed / throttle bodied it'd eat the 182 alive... silly argument really.

My MI16 is on carbs and stripped etc and is currently more like 250BHP/tonne. I've yet to come across a 182 modified or not that has given me a run for my money.

Mmmm! 250bhp/tonne is pretty damn nuts. Any pics mate? I'd love to run carbs...

That was my point.

Whatever you do to a 205 its always going to be slower than a 182 that's been given the same amount of effort. The 205's engine (including the Mi16) is outdated, the rear suspension is hopeless, everything about it is old and is always going to take more work to get it to a given level of performance than a 182 or similar.

I love 205s to bits. I've driven plenty of exotic cars over the years but my completely standard 1.6 GTi is the most fun of the lot. But it is not a fast car by modern standards, and whatever you shoe-horn under the bonnet or do to the suspension that's always going to be the case.

I 100% disagree... 1.6/1.9s are okish by modern standards. 8-9secs to 60 is what most little warm hatches will do. Mi16 with any small amount of fettling is going to result in a pretty decent performer. Nearly 200bhp/tonne simply from the mi16. Add cams / tbs and you could be looking up to 250bhp/tonne (stripped). You're telling that's not going to be a fast car in modern standards?

The rear susp isn't rubbish either if set up right... just need to know what you're doing.

Are you nuts!! smile

I have to agree with Ethos. Peugeot must have done something right given the high regard held for 205s and their deserved praise for excellent handling be it straight out of the box or modified. The suspension isn't rubbish. Rubbish susp would surely equal poor handling??

By the way, Ethos are you on 205 drivers with the same username?

if you can spend money on making a 205 better whats to stop everyone else from making there cars better too as for the power to weight raito issue i am pretty sure a striped out 182 wouldnt weigh all that much either. i bet if you tune the nuts off a 205 or any other car theres a good chance it will go bang!

all said and done tho i would love to see the 205 mixing it with hondas and clios the old and the new would make it even more exciting to watch plus everyone loves to see the under dog
