How hard would it be to replace a saxo vsx 1.4 8v engine for a 1.6 16v unit? What would be required as the missus wants something abit quicker and hers is gettng abit sluggish! i know the 16v has rear disc brakes but are these really necesssary as the rear drums brakes have been recently replaced!

It's a pretty easy swap, might need a few wires changed around on the loom but there's plenty of how-to guides on various saxo and 106 forums. Everything else is the same- engine mounts, gearbox, drive shafts etc.

Drums are more reliable than the discs on Saxos and give more than adequate power considering the front heavy nature of the car. It's worth considering upgrading the front brakes though- either VTS ones or the slightly larger 206 GTI set up.

It's worth looking into just buying a VTS though. They are pretty cheap at the moment, and there is enough demand for your smaller engined car (more insurable for younger drivers) to keep their prices fairly similar. You'd also then get all the up-rated suspension and better spec. An engine conversion will cost at least £500.

I agree with the above.

Please think about getting a VTS instead of the faffing about with engine change. I sold a (00) VTR and bought a (99) VTS for the same price. Its mainly dependant on insurance more than anything.

Oh and be prepared, they aren't great on fuel to say the least. Possibly the most un-economical 1.6 unit I know!

i would prefer to sell it and buy a vts but the car was vandalised not long after i bought it and has got deep long and swirly scratch marks on most panels so cant see it been worth much at the minute! The old mans a painter so trying to persuade him to sort it out but she wants something quicker before then! and this seems like the easiest and cheapest option! (i wont be payin the fuel bill though!)

Fuel shouldn't be much worse than the 1.4 so don't worry about that.

Really?

Well mine is far worse than the 1.6 8v (VTR) I had. Im averaging mid - low 20's in the VTS as opposed to mid 30's in the VTR.
Mind you I had mine de-cat'd today as the CAT had gone, perhaps this made mine use more juice?

Im being honest when I say I'm not getting much more than that!
They are really in-efficient engines. On a par with the likes of Type R's etc. according to the books/reviews.

Almost fell off my chair when i red that. When pottering about usually get 37MPG, when thrashed, i.e up until the gear change light comes on never seen anything below 32MPG.

Well you must be lucky to say the least!
I imagine its anywhere from 22-25 round town but I do drive it very hard everyday! (well kept at the same time).

Parkers combined shows 31mpg and they are usually ambitious.
Autotrader tech spec states 22mpg round town which is 95% of my driving so I think its spot on.
Also, I assume the shift light is an addition?
