I'm considering a GTI-6 as a daily drive at the moment and keep hearing conflicting things about fuel economy. While Parkers quotes 31 MPG combined, a few people i know say they can regularly get higher when driven gently, and some say they are in the 20's. So do any of you guys get horrific figures, or do you find it more economical then expected? Obviously this being for a standard car on a relaxed run.

I have a GTi-6 and a heavy right foot (it urges you to drive this way) mine is standard barring a 3" rolled out tail pipe and I average around 25mpg.

They're not the most frugal of vehicles but are well worth the expense (IMO)

If fun per MPG is what yu're after I hear the clio sport range 172/182/192 get pretty good MPG figures? Somewhere in the high 30's if I remember correctly.

Surely the mpg benefits of an RS Clio would be outweighed by the fact they cost twice as much?

As darren said they vary vastlty

I sold mine and it was doing about 22 mpg.

There are others that will be 30 all the time, and others that will get to nearer 40 on a run.

But for 2k its a lot of car, and in regards to Darrens comments on the clio, the 306 does what the clio does pretty much, and has space for everything you could throw at it. I moved house with mine hehe

okgo - thats good to know I'm moving soon and I wondered how i would do it. Although I do quite fancy the idea of hiring a transit I could stick a copy of the daily sport in the window along with a thermos.

In 22k of driving mine I've never averaged less than 27mpg (measured, not guessed) from a tank. Not managed over 32mpg either. Up until 8 months ago I was doing up to 400 miles a week with a mix of city rush hour and off peak motorway.

These days it's strictly almost entirely school run type driving and I still manage 29mpg from most tanks.

I always use V-Power which seems to return 5-10% better mpg.

You'll get good economy cruising on the motorway - I used to see high thirties under those circumstances. 30 average would be about right.

Pretty much the same here, but that was on Sainsburys Super (97ron)

Hows the 205 mate?

I dont know what its worth, but parkers also said mine (VTS) gets 31mpg.
In reality its FAR lower. Go on Autotrader and search 306 GTi 6, and find one with (technical spec) below the main page picture.

I had a look for you
(more accurate than Parkers in my opinion)

Urban (city) - 20.8mpg
Motorway - 38.8mpg
Combined - 30.1

I would guess mid 20's is an average.

Hi Sean, 205 is going fine at the moment, just got to get it through an MOT (uh-oh) and then it will be off the road for a while having some work done. After pondering for ages over the GTI-6 i seem to have acquired a Puma 1.7, bit slower but hopefully more frugal. May still get a Rallye or GTI sometime in the future but the Puma was a pretty good deal, and i still have the 205 to remind me of the delights of french motoring!

Not a bad car in its own right!!
I toyed with the idea of a Puma, have a reputation as good handlers with enough poke, even like the interior and feel of it. (drove my cousins)
So you going to be driving the 205 to the next meet or the Puma?
Must cost you a bit to insure both mind?

I'm moving up to Northampton soon to start a new job, so i will take the 205 up there with the Puma. Will probably have some sort of competition policy on the 205 when it's done, it won't be doing many road miles. That's the plan at the minute anyway. May try and make it to another SW meet sometime next year though, i'll miss the roads alot haha

What are you going to be doing?

I had my MOT last week, wasnt good news.
It failed on rust on the chassis. Luckily I know a welder that can do it for £60 but a 9 year old car should not be rusting away underneath!

How is the Puma to drive,... must be far more refined than the 205! biggrin
