Going to Diesel Power!

Hi all
Thinking of selling my Renault 197 because Im being priced off the road with the fuel costs and the road tax Thinking of trading it in for a CITROEN C2 VTS 1.6 HDI Anybody got one of these? Like to know long term test report What they like to use as a everyday motor

What is the obsession with diesel??? It costs more than petrol and servicing is generally dearer. What you gain in torque you loose in engine rev-ability. If you want something economical why not get a 1.4 or 1.6 pertol engined car? They are on average about 15% cheaper to buy too!!!

First off, MPG, modern supermini diesels are pushing upto 60mpg these days compared to 40-45mpg from the best little petrols. This should easily outweight the extra cost of the stuff. It will also be a bit more powerfull than the equivalent petrol engine too.
Yes the cost of the car will be slightly more, servicing wont be much more though as they dont specify such short service intervals anymore and can go longer between services than some petrol cars now, this should offset some of the cost in that area too.
Not forgetting the governments obsession with tax the little diesels also seem to be cheaper on road tax due to the low emissions they produce now.

iv driven a derv vts and it still feels as lively as the others in its range!

I have done the maths with the diesel vs. petrol thing and I can assure you the government does not cease to tighten the gap between them with regards to economy of running. The only exceptions are the VW bluemotion polo and a similiar offering from seat and some wierd smart car...

Thats all very well, but we're not comparing the economies of bikes. And anyway i could only just get 50mpg out if my SV650S, you must of been riding it like a fairy

Not everybody wants to drive an old 205 though, if you take the purchase price out then the newer supermini diesels will throw your running costs out the window. I'm pretty sure the OP is not looking to step that far back in time to save a few pennies on the running costs of his current small car.

I've got a Seat Leon Cupra 150TDI which is great, 45-50MPG, proper Cupra suspension = excellent fun. Road Tax only £115 last year. Pulls like a train right up to 5K rpm, 110,000 miles now from new with no major faults at all. I would have no hesitation in reccomending one of these to you, I think it's a great car and has reasonable running costs too. You will probably find it much cheaper to insure as well. Services are every 10K but every other one is only an oil change.
