Hello Everyone!

Just thought I'd ask if anyone had had the same issue as we just had with the Mother's Renault Laguna 1.9dti (2000, x reg, 115k miles - not doing badly so far!).

I was driving it yesterday and experienced a loss of power steering assistance. Popping the bonnet revealed power steering fluid everywhere suggesting one of the pipes had gone. There was no visible leak, but with the pipes being routed in places we could not see I assumed there was a leak somwewhere.

We filled up the power steering fluid today to see if we could spot the leak - but there wasn't one. Power assistance is back, turning from lock to lock everything works correctly.

Is there some kind of pressure valve that I've missed - how can the fluid have escaped, but now be being held in the system?

Any hints would be much appreciated. The mother is a little lady so I'd rather not risk the steering suddenly going when she was driving in traffic or similar.

Many thanks!

Sorry there's such a long time between the first post and this one, but I couldn't help but take notice. About two years ago on our previous Laguna (N-reg 2 litre petrol - we had it for nine years...good memories) I think there was either some strange noises or a strange feeling coming from the steering. Dad took it to our usual garage, and the mechanic came to the conclusion that a high-pressure hose was leaking. I have extremely limited mechanical knowledge (I would like to have a lot more!) but from what I can remember it was a very big job, which involved removing various parts of the car, including part of the chassis I think.

I'm guessing it was at a similar millage to your mother's as well - so probably best to take it in somewhere and get the problem diagnosed. Other than that, the nine years we had the Laguna were trouble-free. I never got to drive it, but Mum and Dad liked it. Yes, it was a (sort-of) sad day when we swapped it for our new (well, a one-year-old 2006) Laguna.

Hope nothing bad has happened. If something has gone wrong and it needs fixing, I hope the repair bill isn't too much!

Regards,
Peter

Hello there,

Completely forgot to post this update in order to help any fellow PH'er.

We invited our local mechanic over and he found it was the steering fluid pipe, as expected. The problem had been caused by the clutch cable coming out of one of its clips, and wearing the pipe away.

The fault didn't happen again once we'd filled it up as the clutch cable came to rest on the the steering fluid pipe when not depressed (ie when parked) so when we started and ran the car (without moving and changing gear) we didn't find this out. A strange one, but £50 put it right again and the old girl is back on the road

Hope this helps,

DS
