clio 197/182 or impreza or type R?
Discussion
Sorry to trouble you with another of these what car threads but any opinions would be welcome...
I'm thinking of trading my 03 reg 45k miles impreza wrx for something a bit lower in mileage and maybe a bit newer. I expect to get maybe £7-8k if I trade it in and will maybe add another £3-4k at most so my price range is roughly 10-12k.
I'm thinking along the lines of either another impreza, a civic type r or a clio 197 or 182. I've had a type r in the past and don't think there's much to choose between these and the impreza (ie. I liked both).
But has anyone here driven a 197/182 and civic type r/impreza? How do they compare, particularly in terms of performance and fun to drive? I know an impreza will be a bit swifter than a 197/182 but would i notice a huge difference?
Also, the 197 clio cup gets a great write up in Autocar this week. I'm wondering is there a big difference between this and the standard 197 as the cup is not in my price range at the moment.
My final thoughts are that the 182 seems good value at the moment with low mileage examples on maybe a 05/55 plate around for less than £9k. While maybe the 197 still seems a touch pricy (£11-12K) and the depreciation curve for the early ones is likely to be steepish for another year yet so don't seem great value for money?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

Andy the 197 and 197 Cup do differ quite a bit.
1. The Cup has the cup chassis as standard along with anthracite wheels. The Full Fat 197 has this chassis as an option.
2. The cup is only 20kgs lighter than a full fat 197, despite loosing a number of standard pieces of equipment.
The cup doesn't have painted wing mirrors or side rubbing strips. It also does not have air con, key card, cruise control, aluminium pedals. It is also missing the multifunction 197 steering wheel. It also does not have the better quality soft touch dash and door casings that you find in the 197 and instead is fitted with a dash from the basic clio.
I personally wouldn't buy one, we instead bought our second full fat 197 (it was that or a new wrx) with cup chassis and lots of other toys.

I had the same budget as you, Ive driven civic type r's and an assortment of subaru's (also owned an elise and various cooper s's) I went for a low mileage R27 197 and must say its the best car ive owned, not the fastest in a straight line but the combination of the handling, brakes and fantastic ride quality and (surprising) quality feel make it feel a well sorted car.
For me it would have to be a 197 R27 (F1)
Its a bit loud but all the better for it IMO!

I just bought a new 182 last week...Test drove it and it was unbelievable. I had a mini cooper S before and the clio seemed a lot quicker and had more urge about it! I collect it on thursday this week and Im trying to find out a few things about it. It has the grey alloys on it but im unsure if its a cup or not. How can i tell? its a 54 plate, am i able to have the cup suspension fitted to it if its only the standard 182? where can i do this? Can anyone help? Cheers

I'm pretty sure Anthrite (grey) alloys signify that the 'Cup' suspension is fitted. That is one 'Cup' pack. The other is 'Cup' spoilers (bootlid and black splitter on front bumper). Both these 'Cup' packs were an option on the normal 182 or standard fit to the 182 Cup.Whether your car is a 182 Cup or a 182 with 'Cup' packs fitted is another matter! Does it have Cup badges stuck on either side? If so I think that means it is a 182 Cup (trouble is they are only a sticker so easily removed or not fitted). Only other difference is whether it has AC or CC (climate control) - the 182 Cup does without CC.
HTH
the clio 182 cup is only available in either racing blue or inferno orange the come without light washer jets and they dont have leather seats front or back they do without climate control auto lights and wipers they also feature darker wheels and stiffer suspension and they weigh a massive 20kg less than a normal clio182 they also feature metal badges on the door pillar reading cup and a sticker on the inside of the door reading clio cup
