A night to remember
Discussion
Tonight was a night which will not be forgetting quickly!
Was out with a mate who has just finished his 205 Gti. I was in my D-turbo 306 and him in his, testing it to sort out any problems before we headed to the Evo Triangle tomorrow. I decided that I would take mine just incase we had any problems. Started off on the A55 duel carrage way everything seemed fine, his was running perfectly. Soon we ventured onto back roads which I knew better than him so was in front. When on the backroads it started to suffer a bit of power loss but soon lost my mate driving behind me, being worried something had happened I pulled over to allow him to catch up. Once he had we just started to set off when there was an almighty bang, smoke pouring out of engine and the car stalled as it threw oil all over the floor. But wait this was not the 205 no, it was my good ol' reliable 306 which was taken out incase HE ran into difficuties!
After the smoke stopped we opened the bonnet to discover something shiny where there would usually be a crankcase, but no instead was a piston! Walking up the lay-by picking up any bits of engine which were lying on the floor waiting for the recovery vechile to come which took 90 minutes from the time I called the RAC. Soaked through and covered in oil the recovery van arrived and was told that the power loss was the bottom end going and the stress from pulling away threw a rod!
New engine here I come!

DHY engine code...probably, these are known to let go for some reason or another, nobody quite knows, most that will go have done so already
rumors about a set of N/A con rods in going into turbo engines, and bad tolerances on them go around, most sensible idea is the EGR valve gunks the engine up and blocks the spray jets that cool the pistons, causing them to overheat and go pop...taking out the block and other bits with them
if your after a replacement, look for a citroen engine, they used DH8 versions, which are the same but come with bosch pumps (good) and do not suffer the conrod failure, also it might be worth looking for a late style turbo while your at it, i think they were k03's, makes the car much more linear

Mine's on an R plate and has yet to go bang...where would the engine code be found?rumors about a set of N/A con rods in going into turbo engines, and bad tolerances on them go around, most sensible idea is the EGR valve gunks the engine up and blocks the spray jets that cool the pistons, causing them to overheat and go pop...taking out the block and other bits with them

EGR has been disconnected.
on an R plate, it will be a DHY, to be honest some go and others dont.... there were a lot of these engines and only a handful have blown (the odds of getting a bad one are quite slim) most are reliable and will run forever
I think most that were going to go have done so already, just make sure the oil is changed every 6k or 6 months and for good quality stuff and you should be ok, there really isnt much you can do about it, if the EGR is off then thats a good thing, it keeps the system clean
i have heard that they can pull in a LOT of oil when revved, and if there is less than there should be in the sump then it can starve it...perhaps that coupled with clogged spray jets are part of the problem, I dont know really, it's hard to deduce the cause when an engine has thrown itself apart
if it does go, at least you can replace the engine cheaply enough, just keep an eye on the oil
