Thinking about getting a 406 2.0 petrol, not going to go for the SRi as it poorly equipped but the executive model has the same engine but all the trimmings.

If I do get one I’m hoping to get it up to about 250bhp plus I can get my self a dump valve

Any one had an experience of these? I can’t believe how cheap these cars are now you can pick up a shed for about £500 and a total minter with FSH for £1500

250 bhp would require a bigger turbo and manifold to match, you would need bigger injectors, and also a standalone management to run it properly as the standard ecu isnt up to much and has a limit of 1 bar of boost.
Intercooler would also require upgrading. Would cost a fair bit.

Max power on a standard engine and turbo is around 180bhp+ with just a boost upgrade. But saying that we managed to get 231bhp out of one in a 205 running a bar of boost on the standard turbo, but that figure may not be the most accurate.

Some mad europeans have apparantly took the standard bottom end to 300bhp so you shouldnt need to touch it for the figures your looking at.

I was planning on fitting a bigger turbo & intercooler, full exhaust system and dump valve, but will this mean I need a new ecu

In all honestly I’m not looking to build a monster It will be my daily driver so if 250 is going to cost the earth I’ll aim a little lower. With the above mods I should push over 200bhp?

The ECU is only good for 1 bar of boost, any more and it cuts the fuel. I have heard of a few people remmaping them but still the MAP sensor only has a 1 bar maximum range.

Injectors are only good for about 180bhp of fuel so bigger injectors would require ECU modifications aswell.

I managed 174bhp out of my Xantia with just a slight boost upgrade using a manual boost controller, this was at approx 0.8 bar, i dare say it could have gone higher and broke the 180bhp barrier but i didnt want to stress it too much. 200bhp is possible but you really are pushing over the limits of the turbo and fueling.

Why not just get 3.0V6 executive instead ?

to heavy on the juice turbos not much better but the fact you can have a dump valve makes up for it.

Like i said if i can get the turbo to about the same speeds as the V6 i'll be happy not after scooby slayer

I have only heard horrific things about fuel consumption even in standard trim, which makes sense of an 8v turbo with such low compression in a relatively heavy car. Although you can run up to 180 bhp quite comofrtably i have heard the exhaust manifold is fairly restrictive so that be worth looking into getting changed. Beyond that as mentioned before, bigger turbo's, intercoolers are all necessary. Maybe not massively reliable as a daily driver. Again is would probably say go for a V6, if you are that desperate for a dump valve then some plonkers make fake electric ones rolleyes

My turbo Xantia was horrendous on fuel wether the boost was upped or not. Everything checked out ok so there was no problems engine wise, i averaged 22-25mpg.
The V6 is supposed to be slightly better due to its higher compression.

And as for the dump valve, dont be silly... terrible things...
I had a large cone filter on my Xantia and it would chatter away very loudly and sounds much better than a sneezing elephant.

Nope, its better...

I really hate them as in 99% of cars they serve absolutely no purpose and sound ste..

May as well just buy a Saab 9000 if you wanted a fully loaded FWD daily runner that is easy to tune (much easier than the 406). Just as cheap.

My Dad has had a 406Sri from new - they're OK. Only really good for removing the engine and sticking it in something smaller though.

I'd get a V6 personally - much better sound, over 200bhp as standard and fuel economy is probably the same in real-world driving.

you've been reading practical performance car aint you? i really dont like the saab 9000 one of the ulgyest cars on the road

I had 211bhp 221lb/ft from mine with a 205 GTi camshaft, boost upgrade and some other bits. I had a handy thing called a FCD (fuel cut defender) with plumbed into the boost feed to the ECU and acted like a live bleed valve. Making the ECU think that boost was normal. Of course the boost cut is there for a reason so be careful!
I ran 1.4 bar of boost comfortably.

The 205 cam is a highly recommended mod as the standard cam is very, very lazy.

Good cars, mine was especially lovely in Cossack grey, lowered a wee bit on spax adjustables and 17" Wolfrace alloys.

i have a crashed 406 16valve an was wondering if any of you would know how easy or dificult it would be to transfer all running gear over to a 306 that i also have, is it possible?

Yep very easy conversion, alot of people put em in 205's

not much point though, the 406 16v is a 136bhp...and came in the 306 as standard (XSI) which are worth £2.5k now
it's also a heavy engine for the 205, they benefit much more from the lighter 1.9 alloy block (though that has it's disadvantages)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....regardless, a 9000 is a better car in every conceivable way.

You want a dump-valve AND good looks....some people are never satisfied......

woooooooooosh bringing this thread back from the dead!

I'm kindof semi-considering thinking about getting a hold of one of these engines and trying to plumb it into my car and I have a few questions.

Is it possible to fit a 16v head to this engine, Say from a 306 GTi-6 or XSI? Also with regards to the exhaust manifold is there room behind the engine to fit a less restrictive one? If so are there any tuning companies that make these or would it be a one-off thing to make?
