205 16V Conversion
Discussion
Morning Gents, I am considering doing a winter rebuild on my 1.9gti on a J plate ( i now it's early but preperation is everything). I have aquired an absoltly mint MI16 Head from a J plate 405. The question is, as the head came from a 1.9 block in the 405, will it fit straight onto my current block or is that just complete rubbish? If someone can put me on the right track i'd appriecate it, it would also give me a reason to go and get myself another engine and the wife couldn't refuse me!
Any tips would be great, i know my way around the 1.9 engine but the MI16 is a totally new beast to me...
Cheers

No, basically.
The 8v & 16v blocks are not the same – you’d need to go to a lot of hassle to get it all modded so that the water lines meet up. Only worth it for racing where regs dictate car must use original block. Easy enough just to find and use a 16v block. Personally, I’d sell the 8v engine and Mi16 head and fit a GTi-6 lump complete (or turbocharge the 8v).

Thanks Teknopug, better that i knew before i took the 8V apart with the wrong intentions. GTI6 sounds good, 8V Turbo sounds even better! May have to go back to the drawing board and have a re-think. Any idea's of were Turbo's come from for the XU 8V engines? (405 Weasel?) I've seen them on Ebay before but the pictures and write ups have never filled me with confidence. Cheers
Very little point in using an Mi16 now unless you can get one VERY cheap. GTi-6 are a better engine in every area and prices are also cheap. 406/Xantia turbo transplants are very popular too due to the availability of engines. Good for upto 200bhp before you have to start spending serious cash. Turbocharging the 1.9 8v gives more pleasing results (in my opinion) and becomes more economically attractive once you start aiming over 200bhp.
GTi-6 for a track orientated car though, no question.
