I have read alot about the new 197 Cup. Has anyone actualy driven one? How is it?

The idea seems good and the price even better but looking at the second hand value of R27 Clios they do appear to be the slightly better option.

What do people think?

Did the R27 get the longer 6th gear? I don't think it did. Something to bare in mind if you do many motorway miles and/or that would bother you.

I think the Cup is a great idea - doing away with some of the toys & features you don't really need and keeping the good bits. However personally I'd always plump for a used car over buying brand new. And what with the R27 having the same 'Cup' suspension, which I would want, I'd go for that.

I think a fair few people may have picked a Cup partly because they wanted white as non-cost option too.

Yep R27 never came with the longer 6 gear ratio.

However why on earth would you spend 14k (once you've added seats/aircon and head lights) to then get a 1.2 french interior style death by plastic? Ok the R27 isnt heaven but it will be 99% as quick as the Cup but will have all the toys.

Think I may have to pop over to the dealership at lunch and take a look at their full spec R27 and also see if they have a cup.

I would like the toys to be honest and I am sure there will be some monster deals to be had on second hand R27s through dealers.

Not true, some of the later R27's came with the revised gear ratio's. I'd def go for an R27 over a cup. For the same sort of cash you're getting the better dash, reach/rake adjustable steering, recaro's, and air con. No brainer for me.

When was the longer ration introduced into the R27? If this is the case then I would be very interested in taking this route over the Cup.

Am I right in thinking the R27 comes with bluetooth phone prep as well?

Not sure about bluetooth, have a look over on www.cliosport.net for info regarding dates etc for the better gear ratio's. Megane R26 values are quite tempting 2nd hand as well.

Talking to the head sales guy for the Portsmouth Dealership (when i considered one) he said that i would have to wait for the Cup if i wanted the longer ratio box as no R27's were to come with the revised gearboxes due to the production of them ending before the new box was to be implemented on production lines? Although i would conceed that he could of been spinning me a tale..

Tell me about it!

I have yet to drive one of these but all I have heard is praise. Has anyone got experience of both the R26 and R27, how do they compare?

I'm not a great fan of the 197. IMO
R26 is quicker (quite a bit in the real world due to the torque)
Better steering, 197 has very light, feel-less steering
More practical, similar mpg (Clio's poor for it's size due to the weight)
Clio has the better cabin, better brakes, better sounding engine, and to my eyes is the better looking car.

In the last line did you mean to say Clio?

So what you think that >>>>>>>>>>

The Megan is quicker, has better steering, is more practical and good mpg for a car of its size
BUT
the clio has a better interior, better brakes, sounds better and looks better

Which do you prefer?

Megane by a mile! The only thing important thing for me is the drive, and the Meg is the better drive. The 197 just feels too ordinary until you push it. With the 172/182 it always felt like little car, big engine. The 197 feels gutless.

wow...my post rate is rubbish!...once a year thats all i need!....i have just bought a Clio 197cup in Nimbus with aircon (should be a pic on my profile)...through Broadspeed which came in at about £13.5kwhich to me is pretty good value for money(in terms of BHP per pound), as my local dealer wouldn't budge on price(Bridges Newbury..this is the 3rd car sale you have missed out on...mind you the sales guy was wearing an Arfur Daily type coat..which i found disturbing)...anyway...i'm no Renault nerd but i like these little cars and this is my third one...172cup(great car!)....182 with cup suspension(great car...too many toys) and now this one!!.....as for feeling gutless!!!...rubbish...feels exactly the same as my 182 though without the 4k noticable cam lift at 3.5k revs or whatever it was...there is nothing in it!!.....the 182 was a great car but most of the toys just annoyed me...i thought i would like them but i didn't.....auto wipers-never quiet worked like you wanted them to...auto lights-the same,climate-the same....so for me the 197 cup was the best solution...go and have a go in one...you will like it!..by the time you spec up a 197 with the toys it will be a lot more than the cup....interiors in both the cup and standard look plasticky so..it depends on what type of plastic you like the look of!

Im pleased you like your car, but i think going back to post its the justification of going economy spec for a few k less which doesnt add up in my head. IF (and wasnt in your case i apreciate) it was to do with money get a 2nd R27 theres one going for 14k in Portsmouth dealers at the moment!

As with the toys, i dont see them as toys more like average kit really and they work as well as you might expect a french car to do... (i have no issues with my 182FF and i've had german quality for some time to compare it with)

I think regarding interior I cant see how anyone would like the grey on grey interior the Cup comes with, reminded me of the 1.2 hire car the dealership give you!

agreed the interior does look cheap...but as i said it depends which plastic you like the look of most....grey plastic with some shiney silver bits...or grey plastic with slightly less shiney silver bits..i can't see its worth paying the premium!...horses for courses in terms of new or old though!!...r27's are good value for money...i have seen standard 197's for less than 10k...lets face it we are not buying Renaults to make money on them!....i had no issues with my 182...it was a great car!..i guess gadgets are not my thing!

Yer exactly their never going to make us money (well depends if you can wait 30 - 40 years) and we dont buy them for their lavish interiors either so i do take your point.

On a side note how are you finding the Cup and could you give us an idea of MPG etc...

We went for the 3rd way when we ordered our 2nd 197.

We chose a full fat 197 with cup chassis. The specification is identical to the now no longer available R27, minus the little plaque telling you it's a special edition and nor does it have the graphics. It does have the revised gearbox, which makes it a much nicer place to be than the original very loud 197.

It is my understanding that some of the last R27's were built with the revised gearbox. You can't however judge when a car was built by the number it was given. Although number 500 was definately the last off the line.

Our new car is returning high 28's early 29's in terms of MPG, up from low to mid 28 on the old car.

Damon, if you are not already make sure it is running on Super Unleaded. The 197's love in particular BP Ultimate, Total Excellium and Sainsbury's Super.
