With apologies to anyone also on ClioSport where I'll shortly be asking a similar question...

It's a while since I've sold a car privately but now I find I need to due to my brother in law selling me his Merc A class at a decent price. I've priced up my Clio 172 Sport using parkers and what car (mileage adjusted) and looked at what they're actually advertised for on PH and autotrader. Trouble is I'm not convinced it's worth what that research suggests so it looks to me like people are loading prices a bit expecting to get knocked down by rather more than the 5% I always used to work on.

The car is 2003 53 black Clio Sport 172, decent spec and condition (won't list to avoid accusations of blatant advertising! Once I've worked out a price it'll be in the classifieds anyway!).

It is high mileage at 82000 ish but even factoring that in the guides suggest £5500 ish - I think the mileage is more of a factor and am thinking of pitching it just below £5000, does that sound a bit more reasonable?

I'd say put it up at £5500 and see how much you get knocked down.

All depends how much you'd be happy getting for it.

Trouble is I don't want to over-price to the point where the phone doesn't ring! I guess I'm a bit out of touch with the market but it seems that if I want somewhere just under £5000 for the car, putting it up at over £5000 will put a lot of purchasers off from even enquiring!

Whatever you price it at, people are still going to try and knock you down.

Work out the lowest you can afford to take for it, then add £500.

You'd be very lucky to get 5k with that mileage. I paid 5650 for a 53 plate with 40k miles. I'd be thinking 4.5-4.8k. Has cambelt been done?

Yep cambelt done. I think I'll put her up at £5200 ish and take first offer I like (probably £4800 ish).

Anyone had any luck with advertising cards in supermarkets? It'll be on PH and autotrader as well of course!
