Ignition Barrel

Has anyone got any experience with changing an ignition barrel on a 406 D9? I have an ongoing problem that my key goes in and out without bother but when I turn it to the ignition stage of the twist it doesn't flick back on its own anymore and I have to manually click it back? I've tried wd40 down the barrel and at kinds of wiggling but no joy. I have looked at a few options but new lock and key sets seem to be around £100 and more. I don't actually need a new key it must just be the spring mechanism in the barrel but I am not sure how to go about tackling this. Any one had similar or any advice on this? I am fairly sure this isn't an MOT failure, anyone care to correct me.
