Why bother?
more power you thick tt. why elseI think sniff was getting at the fact you are going to ruin a perfectly good Clio by fitting a VAG unit in the front...
Cant you think of using more conventional tuning methods or even turboing the Renault unit for more power?

Why is it going to ruin it? The VAG unit is not massively heavy so the handling should'nt be compromised. And I would have thought it was an easier route to big power given there are loads of tuned VAG units about already.Cant you think of using more conventional tuning methods or even turboing the Renault unit for more power?
No need to knock the guy for trying something different.
RS172 - a guy on cliosport.net built a drag car powered by a VAG engine (from an Audi TT I think)

more power you thick tt. why elseIn regards to the conversion, some go together well, others seem too much of a mismatch for my liking. Redtop XE's in Corsa/Nova's, Mi16's in 205's and of course the 1.8 20VT into a Mk1 Golf are all good conversions and fit together well, but into the Clio is not what I personaly like to see and or familiar with the conversion. The Megane 225 engine would be my choice but i can imagine availability isnt as good.
Maybe if the OP gave us a little more details on the car and conversion instead of a few short lines he may have got a more reasonable response.

So the conversion is only good if its from the same manufacturer? I can see why you may find that preferable but I can't see any real reason it matters. All he wants is more power.
FWIW I don't think the Megane engine fits, and like you say availability is not going to be as good.
I know 1.8 20VT VAG units are available in 150/180/210/225bhp as standard with a lot of tuning potential, but will mean more weight and heat up front, difficulty to fit, needing custom engine mounts and exhaust systems, and modified ECUs to do the job properly.
Personally if I were after a 1.8T VAG engined car I'd start with one from the outset, if the OP wants one in a small car then what's wrong with Seat Ibizas and Polos? Ok so they may not handle quite as well as a Clio but a few quid spent on some decent coilovers or shocks + springs and bushes will soon sort that, along with some weight saving (I imagine there's a fair bit to be stripped from VAG cars as they tend to be built quite solid)
What I was trying to put across in the second post of this thread was that personally I'd much rather sort out the handling of a Polo/Ibiza than sort out fitting a 1.8T unit to a Clio which I could imagine being a nightmare with wiring and getting ECUs to talk to each other. I wish the OP the best of luck with his ambitious project and hope he keeps us all up to date with his progress on here.

Me too as it's essentially a turbo versions of the 182 motor from the Clio. I think you'd be surprised with what turns up at breakers, check out the back pages of the Autotrader. I don't think it would be hard to find a damage example of a 225bhp FWD hot hatch. If the OP has already got an engine and box and stuff then that rules that choice out anyhow.
If you pop over to www.cliosport.net, a guy called mattblack has already done this conversion, not into a 172, but I'm sure most of the important bits will be the same.

how is a 1.8 20vt lump gonna be heavier than a 2.0 f4r? it will be about the same. 172 lowered on 18's with a bit of turbo chatter is good enuf for me anyway, something different at the end of the day. and as for ambitious, its been done a few times in clios, and they go quite well too.Personally if I were after a 1.8T VAG engined car I'd start with one from the outset, if the OP wants one in a small car then what's wrong with Seat Ibizas and Polos? Quote your sources and I'll be happy to accept, but IMO I would estimate a 20VT to be a heavier unit than the RS 2.0 F4R when comparing a fully assembled engine with all pipework and intercooler etc. sniff petrol said:
