BX gti 16v - Mi16 205 engine transplant.
Discussion
I've got the chance of a 1989 BX gti 16v that's 'only' done 120000miles (most are now much higher at that age) for a mere £225. The car's a non-runner due to a faulty fuel pump, the MOT and tax have expired, the door locks are bust, and there's no V5 (but the seller is happy to provide a written receipt)
I would like to take the engine out, scrap the rest of the car and spend some time rebuilding the engine over the next year, ready to put it in my 205 GTi track car next winter.
As far as I'm aware the engine is identical to that in the (now hard to find) Mi16. Any thoughts or advice on this project?

Mechanically identical to the 405 yes apart some ancilleries, there is a little difference with the looms but nothing difficult.
Try breaking the rest of the car or offer it to www.bx16v.co.uk

Cant think of any problems But if i remember one of the cams has a pulley on the end to drive the suspension pump on the BX
Will you be running twin carbs?
Ok Kev, good point about the pump, I've had Xantia's in the past so I should have thought about that. Will you be running twin carbs?

I'd like to keep my twin 40mm Dellorto carbs as I believe the manifold should fit straight on, or do you think it's worth upgrading to twin 45mm carbs?

my 205 has got an Mi from a BX, it really makes little difference. It will breath a lot better with 45s on definately, i think 40s might be a little restrictive.
Ok so the engine's the same then? My 40's have been jetted for track use (the car's not road legal) and there isn't really any power below 3000rpm, might look at getting them re-jetted when they go on the 16v lump if I can't source some 45's for a reasonable price by then.

It is the same engine, though a shame to scrap such a rare car to create another bastardised 205. I'd love a good solid Bx16v
It's far from immaculate, needs new locks and there's no V5 so not sure how easy it would be to register. The fact the MOT and tax have been left to expire makes me think the rest of it isn't so great. If you like them so much there's a guy in the classifieds on here with 2 for sale - why not give him a ring.driverrob said:
I'm missing something here.
How and why would you want to put carbs on an engine with injectors?
I also think it's a bit over-priced. My immaculate (I kid you not) 1989 BX GTi 8V with 90,000 miles sold for £255 three years ago.
Firstly, power and response (and it's a lot easier to fit than changing the wiring looms over)How and why would you want to put carbs on an engine with injectors?

Secondly 8v's are no way near as popular as 16v's due to the number of them around, have a look how much Mi16 engine fetch on Ebay nowadays.
Large carbs will flow more and thus provide more power than the stock injection system (albeit with less well behaved characteristics at low engine speeds - irrelevant on a track car). Individual throttle bodies will give more power than carbs with much smoother delivery - but cost a hell of a lot more (probably cheaper to turbocharge the engine!).
If you keep it road legal, you insurance should actually drop as the car will be rated based on the new engine (BX16v's are cheaper than 205GTi's to insure).
Mi16 suffer from oil-surge which can kill an engine in no time. If you are serious about your track fun, you may be better off selling the BX/Mi16 and sourcing a Gti-6 lump instead which is far less prone to oil-surge.

I have heard a lot of stories about the oil surge problem which is strange as you never hear about 8v engine suffering the same and I thought the bottom end of the engine was the same? Some people seem lucky and avoid it though. I will be spending a lot of time stripping the engine down and re-building it hopefully so would like to get a baffled sump, or fit some baffles in my existing sump.
its all down to oil being trapped in the Mi16 head, leaving the sump a bit dry.
you can find baffle sumps on many "xu10" engines and fit to the Mi, though you'll need to modify the oil pump pickup to sit lower. useful read here: http://www.taylor-eng.com/sump/wetsump.htm
My engine has done two ring trips and atleast one combe action day and suffered nothing untoward in its lifetime. Sometimes i think its down to put luck

Picked it up on friday, did a deal at £170 in the end cause it wasn't quite as described. It seems really tidy, every panel's straight, no rust, interior's mint and it's only done 120000 miles, as mentioned above it would be a shame to break it just for the engine. Does anyone know how many BX GTi 16v's they either made/came over to Britain/are left?

end of the day its an ugly car with not many redeeming features. get that engine out of there asap!
Looking at it out of the window it's starting to grow on me, hopefully I'll find something major wrong with it that'll make it uneconomical to repair. Got lots of other work to do at the moment, indoors luckily. Will make a start on the BX when the weather gets better.Gassing Station | French Bred | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
