I have been looking to change from a Saxo VTR in January to something a little quicker.

Have a VTS / 106 GTi / 306 GTi-6 in mind.

Just wondred what the word was out there to the 'best car'.
And are any of these a great deal cheaper to run than one another?
Also the VTS according to Parkers has a 0-60 time of 7.7 opposed to the 306 GTi-6 which is 8.4 (I think). But why is the 306 so much slower with 40bhp more?

Also, are there any other cars you think are a worth contender?

There's noway that that 306 GTi-6 time is correct. It's a very high 6/ low 7 second car.

Out of that lot I personally would take the GTi-6. I currently have a Phase 1 172. They're another option. Facts and figures stacked on paper tell relatively little about a car.

Ignore the parkers figures, the gti6 is a low 7 car that will do 140 in standard form, a very capable engine inside a very capable chassis..
Thats what I would (did!) choose and have no regrets!

I'd recommend the 306, not because I've got one (although its only xsi), but because it feels alot less like a tinfoil go-kart that the other two.

Another vote for the GTi-6. Unless you can stretch to a 182 Trophy...

What he said. Although a VTS/106GTI is a step forward in terms of power it'll still have the same annoying niggles that you no doubt have with the VTR, and has the same chassis so will feel pretty similar by all accounts.

A 306 GTI6 has a whole new set of niggles! But also has the luxury of things like leg room and air con, and being a heavier car it will also ride a bit better. Will use a lot more fuel though.

None of the cars are particulaly efficiant if they are being used properly. Although 6-gears in the 306 might make it better on the motorway.

Depends if you want something more settled or something more focussed, out of the 3 I'd go for a 306 GTI6/Rallye, its more stable than the 106 and has a proper engine which can fairly easily see over 200bhp.

Of course being biased I'd go for a 205 with a 16v engine, light and a proper engine.

I'm selling my 306 rallye at the moment, awesome car! Sold a clio 182, needed to free up some cash. I can honestly say the rallye is the better car to drive. And much quicker than the book figures. In a straight line, stays neck and neck with a friends 182 FF. On a private runway.

If it's handling you're talking about, the 306 is less stable than a 106. Lift off oversteer is severe in a 306, 106s are a lot more controllable and forgiving in a slide.

I'd still go for the GTI6 though, it offers a lot more as a road car, and one would hope it's not being driven in that manner on a road anyway!

Admitadly I've only had a DTurbo 306 but I have to say the LOO was quite "exciting" even in that. Controllable once you got used to it but it caught me out more than once.

I quite liked my wife's VTR, good balance of power an economy but prefer the 205 for fun and because there is space for your feet! 309 is a good car but needs more power and less rust...

I don't think there is one right choice, you need to get out there and play. A good owners meet might help...

VTS / 106GTi are a lot more fuel-efficient than the GTi-6. It's not like the 306 is much heavier or makes that much power, but it seems to drink in comparison.

The smaller cars will happily do mpg into the mid-40s cruising on the motorway. I usually got mid-30s in my 106 with mixed driving. Except for the freak cambelt tensioner incident, it was a very cheap car to run for the 5 years I had it. Even with that, it wasn't bad at all.

XU is a much older engine than the TU, 306 is a fair whack heavier, its 47bhp more and has somewhere near a fifth extra capacity, I think I'd let it off for being more thirsty!

I occasionally see mid 30's mpg in my 106. It does a consistent 22mpg when driven properly though wink I've heard elsewhere they can do low 40s with no mods and a light right foot though so I can believe it.

Hi mate.

Thanks for the info, I went for the VTS in the end.

Cheaper to run, and far cheaper insurance on my current policy.

106 gti book times are rubish.. my friends gti completely standard ran 140 bhp, proven. 0-60 just over 6 secs,, n sat beside mates 306 rallye at 145mph, i prefere the 106 out excelarates 306 off the line cause the 306 strugles for grip cause its heavier.. love my 106, especially racing bmws and mitsobishi gtos.. they cant believe they loose to a 106 lol

I had a 306 rallye, great car. Plenty of space, good performance (6.9 to 60), handled terrificly. For me it lacked chuckability like my old 205's, and at felt quite lardy and numb at times. I think the 106 would be more fun to drive than the 306 but, just IMO. Generally a 306 gti6/rallye would be as quick to 60mph as a 106 gti but the 306 would start pulling away after 80-90.

I'd own another 306 rallye though, just prefer lighter hatches which is why i have another 205 gti.

+1

Used this site a lot in my search for a GTi-6 as a daily runner. Had it a month now, and despite a few little niggles, I absolutely love it - such a good chassis, can feel the passive rear steering tightening up turn-in.

Have to say, only been a month now, but has been used in wet, slippy, sweaty roads, and never got to the point of severe lift off oversteer, just a nice increase in turn-in...possibly a sign of the rear beam bushes on their way out?

Pug decided when the gti6 came out to base their 0-60 time on a fully loaded car to keep insurance prices down.

Would give thumbs up for the 206 180 though.
