clio 1.2 grande humming. Garage says Clutch and CV

I own a renault clio 1.2 Grande Mk2 X reg with 44k on clock.
Half way to my destination a couple of weeks ago after about an hour into a 100 mile journey, at about 70mph a loud huming seemed to be coming from engine bay. I pulled over and had a good look around attempted tightening all wheels, and then carried on with the journey. The sound had dissapeared, 10 miutes later it returned. This noise was not apparent during the next week of town driving, A week later I made the same 100 mile journey and the noise was not there. The following week it returned again about an hour into this longish journey. The next week the noise became apparent allmost all the time around 35mph.
When accelerating you can accelerate through it and then when you come off of the accelerator and the engine brakes it appears again. Sometimes it is there when you push in the clutch and remove it, leading the garage to believe its due to the clutch. My garage claims it appears to be a combination of the CV joint (which does knock slightly when turning hard) and possibly the clutch release bearing. The clutch doensnt appear to be slipping and the car goes into gear fine.
I have read on article at http://drivetrain.com/clutcharticle.html which gives a couple of tests to do when the engine is running and the car is in neutral. According to their advice the problem isnt in the clutch. I will add this article as a follow up to this one incase people are interested.
The Garage are quoting £480 for the work on the CV and to replace the clutch which seems excessive, so I may end up doing an ATS job (god forbid!)! Any advice people? Does it sound credible?

If the problem is noise coming from the clutch system, a simple test can identify the source of the noise before you tear into the system. There are two potential bearing-noise makers in the clutch system-the release bearing and the pilot bearing. To determine which one, if either, is making the noise follow these steps:
Step 1 With the engine running and the transmission in neutral, if the noise occurs it is in the transmission, most likely the front bearing supporting the input shaft.
Step 2 If that is not the problem, place your foot on the clutch pedal and begin to depress the pedal. If you begin to hear the noise at this point, the problem is the clutch release bearing. If not, proceed to the next step.
Step 3 Push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor. If you hear the noise at this point it is the pilot bearing or bushing. If you do not hear any noise during this test, the problem is not in the clutch system. Identifying these conditions early before removing and replacing the components goes a long way toward preventing a recurrence of the problem.
