Ive got an 06' Renaultsport Megane and cant fault it, no problems yet at all (touch wood). Decent mpg when you take it easy, plenty of performance too. Got 3 mates both with 1.6 megs and they also have had no prbs, ones on an 03' and the other a 55'
Good luck mate, what are you going for ??

I have a 56 plate 1.5 (106bhp) dci Megane 5dr hatch.
Can't fault it. Very comfy, easily capable of cruising at 3 figures and returning 50+ mpg in the process. 55-60mpg possible at a push. VED band B for that variant. Quiet enough at high speed (low wind noise).
However, I've just popped a post up about potential problems - they're not common apparently, but they do have notices out with dealers about them.
ETA: Just been reading the parkers review. Can't say I agree with some of it. The rear passenger leg room is fine (many 6 footers have been in mine and commented as such). The handbrake is not difficult to use, at all.
I would also disagree that the 1.5 diesel struggles, unless it is referring to the 86bhp one (possibly, this would be limp) - I drove the 130 (1.9) and 106 (1.5) variants and there wasn't enough difference in performance to warrant higher insurance / tax / fuel costs.
I fully agree that the steering is "special" - very light, not much feedback, and takes some getting used to if you want to throw it into a roundabout (I often turned too tight at first) - but it's ok. The MeganeSport is probably better.
Boot is big enough for golf clubs.
"More recent cars seem to be better built and complaints are decreasing." I would agree with this, I've not had problems with mine (although note what I said in the other thread - but those are warranty work).
Main thing would be to say drive one (or more) - which variant are you considering?

We test drove the 1.6vvt & really liked it- loved the equipment & the comfort,
I read the parkers review, & it made for some disturbing reading!
Last thing we need is an unreliable car,
I do realise that people who own these cars are less likely to post a review giving it top marks over someone with an axe to grind...
Its a car for the wife- shes a district nurse so needs a reliable car, which the megane does not appear to be.
I have just put a deposit down on a Corolla t-3 so will be picking that up on Saturday
Which we hope will be more reliable, if a little more dull!

I hope the Corolla does turn out to be reliabe - but I can honestly say that our Megane has done 15000 miles from new and never missed a beat.I read the parkers review, & it made for some disturbing reading!
