Recently bought a Saxo VTR 2000 (phase2). Love the car even more fun than a GTTDi Golf I had which was an overweight Buffalo in comparison!

Allthough build quality comapres to something Hotwheels would make. I have noticed however that in town situations the engine sits just below the 3/4 mark on the temp gauge. I had the gasket skins replaced (didn't require a skim) as it was constantly running in the red, but wonder if maybe there are more issues or do they simply sit a little higher when not in constant airflow?

Could be your radiator isn't working efficiently or if it is your cooling fan(s) isn't.

How does it run on the motorway?

Runs fine on the motorway, just seems to be when im in town start - stop. Just never had an issue like this before, and wondred if it was a common problem or just common? Fan cuts in fine.

My girlfriend has a 106 XSi 1.6, very similar car, and it always runs at somewhere around 3/4s. Noticed the same with my mate's old Quiksilver. Could very easily be a characteristic of the engine or the way the temp gauge is calibrated, remember you've no idea what 3/4s on that gauge actually means. I wouldn't worry about it, remember, its French, first port of call with anything like this is, are the gauges/senders accurate. Answer is usually no.

Just bought a saxo vtr 2001 myself, first thing I noticed was how the temp gauge fluctuates. It ran at 1/3 on the move and crept up to 2/3 at the lights or in nose to tail traffic before the fan kicked in. Its reassuring to know it's not just mine.

My 16v 106 is the same. Runs at 1/2 on the open road, gets to 3/4 on stop/start drives.

Just make sure the cooling system is all properly bled, the radiator is clean and the fan kicks in at some point and there's not much else you can do!
