there seems to not be enough power going to the starter motor, the motor is still turning over though but just not enough to start the car, i did think it was the battery at first but it did the same thing with a new battery, does anyone have any ideas about what it could be?, im guessing maybe the cable from the battery to the starter motor?.

Worth checking the earth wires too, not sure where they locate but normally on PSA cars the engine earth is on the top of the gearbox.

Try putting a jump lead from the engine to the battery earth if it starts up properly then definitely the earths .Diesel engines need very good large earth cables to start well .
