306 Motronic 5.2 > engine swap
Discussion
I have just bought a 2001 306 1.6 98hp for my wife (i.e. me as I like driving it) and of course i'd like more power.
So I noticed that the XU10J4R 2.0 16V of the 306 XSi and 206 GTI uses the same Motronic 5.2 as my 1.6. I gather that swapping ecu can be a hassle with these ecus due to transponder, but I wonder if anyone has looked into swapping engines that run the same management. Seems to me there is a chance that if the management is the same, then an engine with harness could be swapped in and ecu flashed with a 306 XSi "performance chip" probably providing about 0hp but correct fuel and spark tables. What are your thoughts on this?
The logical course of action in any nation bar mine would be to just purchase a GTI6, but due to huge import tax on power and CO2 emission, a swap is economically viable. Sidenote - does anyone know the proper code for a 5-door 306 XSI with the 2.0 16V engine?

First off the 306 XSi and 206 GTi engines are not the same. XU10J4R in the 306 as you mention and the 206 is an EW10 unit.
I should imagine the wiring will differ greatly even though your engine and the XU10J4R run the same management, the manifolds and sensors will be in a different position.
If you were to perform such a conversion i would recomend you get the whole engine loom and its ECU as it will prove cheaper and a lot easier in the long run.
