As good as the 205 gti is i would opt for the 106 being a slightly newer car. Its an excellent B road basher in any form, but try to find a phase 2 1.6 rallye as its a little more refined than the 1.3 but still has that raw edge on the limit. All 3 are good cars though.

Try a 106 first, the pedals are quite cramped and can take some getting used to.

Have you considered the 306 GTi6 (or Rallye)? These are becoming quite cheap now as well.

definately the series 1 rallye. the 1.3 needs to be driven enthusiastically but with some subtle mods, uprated suspension bushes etc it can keep up with almost anything on a good a/b road blast! the 205 is too old now. they will have been cared for better than a 205 of the same age in general. the 106 rallye register is a good place to look for a well kept and original one.

I would not be put off a 205 on age alone. They don't tend to rust and everything is easily + cheaply fixed. Also no need for a Cat, which is a big plus IMHO.

As said 106 has very cramped pedals and my size 10 made for a fraught drive.

Have you considered a 205GTi Mi16? Goes like stink. And as previously mentioned the 205s are easy to work on and last a lifetime it they are looked after reasonably well.

Mi Fuel consumption is the same or slightly better than an 8v motor!

Mine tends to drink a fair bit, but only because I'm driving it! The missus gets a much more normal MPG out of it, although with jenveys, an emerald and NOS, fuel is a secondary consideration for me. smile I've not driven a 106, but I find my fairly tweaked 205 more than I can use on the road most of time. If there were more cameras round my way, my licence would be rapidly on it's way back to Swansea. wink

Don't assume the 1.3 Rallyes are more economical than any of the other cars mentioned here! They aren't as frugal as one might assume.

1.3 rallye does approx 34mpg....which is good enough for me...lets says its far better than what a 205 with 45's would be..but i really want one with them on...they sound fantastic...
i really have a soft spot for rallyes though...just the S1's are retro classics...love them

Has to have steel wheels too yes

Best wheels i saw on a Rallye was a set of multispoke white Speedlines on a phase 2 1.6

cloud9 White S2 Rallye on white speedlines = car porn!

34mpg is very optimistic for the 1.3. You'll find you drive everywhere at 4K+ because of the lack of torque low down and peaky power delivery! High 20s would be much more realistic, although I guess a 1.9 on webbers is low 20s so yes it would be better than that! By all accounts the 1.3 is an awesome engine though.

This was a blue one, but they should look just as good on any colour Rallye smile

Yep, i'd agree with all that. I was lucky enough to drive my brother's S2 Rallye for 8 weeks around the roads of N.Wales and i fell in love with it and still reminisce about it now.

I also owned a mint 1.9 GTI for two years, which also spent a sizeable time in N.Wales. I ultimately preferred the 205 but it is so hard to find a good one now, that i think the Rallye would be a great option.
