We are looking for a replacement for our Clio, and have been searching quite a few makes. I have noticed that the C5 diesels seem to be quite a bargain for a large family car, 2001 Y Reg CITROEN C5 2.0 HDi 110 LX ,53,000 miles Manual Diesel can be had for just under £3.5K.

Are they understated bargains, or unpopular for other reasons? (Am quite tempted!)

Cheers,

Chris

You probably better off getting a 406, they pretty much same as the C5 but they much cheaper and last forever.

The C5 is quite a bit bigger than the 406, you need a 407 to get the equivalent Pug, and they are still a bit pricy, and big Citroens go on for ever, I get 4 Xantias, 3 with 180k on the clock!

My brother went from a Zantia to a C5.
he tells be it was the biggest mistake he made, he would have willingly swapped the C5 back for his Zantia.
So, in his opinion, anything is better than a C5

If you do actually go to view a C5 the seller will be extremely pleased to see you

Easy to work on ,electronics very french/italian (ie pants).Don't buy one with a particle filter ,or a 406/407 as these are £500 every 70,000 miles or so.
But a very nice car to drive and usually reliable.I do plenty in the 150,000 miles bracket that have only had routine maintenance no large expenditure at all.
But i still prefer the xantia it's not as large.

Have to admit, I much prefer the Xantia, on me 4th!
3 of them have 180k on the clock and still going strong!
Never had problems with electrics with mine, and the build quality is very good too!
Oh, and the best ride you'll get from any car

I'm on my third C5 now and find them very comfortable for long distance cruising. Have had very little go wrong with mine apart from replacing brakes, tyres, bulbs. If you do consider one, get a later model, '02 onwards if possible. The earlier ones had some problems with software which may or may not have been updated - depending on whether the owner got it serviced properly!

I tend to get mine serviced at the main dealer, seem to have one which is pretty good here, not like some of the horror stories I hear from others.

If I were you, try to go for SX trim rather than LX, much better spec., but the Exclusive has more electrical things that can go wrong. Also, the C5 doesn't like budget tyres it fcensoredks the ride/handling as I found out to my cost.

Thanks for all your comments, unfortunately, the C5 I wanted was flooded up to half the height of the car, so we couldn't even get a test drive (Gloucester!)

We ended up buying a Nissan Almera Tino, instead!
