Tell me about the 306 GTI-6...
Discussion
It's time to downsize from my 406 V6 Coupe. I've been considering a small cabriolet, but a little unconvinced by the winter ownership prospects.
Whilst browsing the £3-4k budget I have seen a few GTI-6's.
What are these like to own, run, insure, etc? I get the whole 'watch out for tatty high-mile, modified, thing - but what else is there to look out for on these?
Any help appreciated.

Hi, great timing!
I've just bought one, 2 weeks ago. I got lots of advice on here and also on http://www.306gti6.com/forum/forum.php
I paid £2650 for mine, 99T, 70kmiles, FSH, generally very good condition, with a few little niggly bits that need sorting. So far I'm very pleased, although admittedly I've hardly driven it yet.
Anything specific you want know, ask. I'm going to try and do some kind of ownership blog somewhere.

Owned both the GTi-6 & Rallye, superb cars, throughly enjoyed them
Running costs aren't too bad, insurance is reasonable, they're ok on fuel if you don't thrash them everywhere and if/when they break the parts are cheap and they're easy to fix.
For that budget you're looking at a later phase 3 model, high milers are fine if they've been looked after correctly, a friend of mine had a 130k example that was a sweet as a nut! However for that sort of money you'll be getting a lower mileage one.
Main probs are knocks/clunks from worn balljoints or droplinks, corroding radiators, broken aircon (pipes corrode) and make sure the cambelt is done sooner than Peugeot specify. The clutch is not expensive to buy, but a good few hours labour to change, so worth getting one with a fresh clutch if possible.

I'd say that more and more it's coming down to condition.Choosing a late model won't guarantee anything now as the values have dropped to that kind of level where anyone can get one.
Cambelt is the main thing, and a good condition radiator. If it won't snap it's belt or overheat, and you don't rag them on cold oil, then from experience with Pug engines generally they'll soldier on forever!
Everything else is just general wear and tear really. Cambelts, rads, bushes, clutches, tyres, brakes, exhausts. All cars wear items, just the Gti6 wears them a bit harder being almost 170bhp and 1.2 tonnes
Really fun though, at the prices now they are a bargain for what they are. Personally I'd say go for a phase 3 for the better seats (firmer and lower bolsters), all the detail changes, white dial needles, chrome bits on the interior, EBD etc, in black with a sunroof.
In my view they will always be fairly steep to run for 'what they are' but ultimately they can exchange blows with some pretty quick stuff, are really fun, and you'll want to use the performance quite often so consumeables get consumed readily
