Numpty alert

The gearchange on my 205 is getting very loose now. Been getting progressively slacker over the last few thousand miles. Does anyone know why this might be, and more importantly what I can do about it? I've done some digging around and gear linkages crop up quite a lot, but I'm no mechanic. Addtionally, when reverse gear is engaged, the lever is now pretty much knocking against the handbrake.

If it makes any difference, I also have only about an inch of clutch pedal travel from floor (fully disengaged) to top of travel (fully engaged). No problems engaging gear though, still as smooth as ever. This feels like it's not-very-normal though.

Ta!

The L-shaped pivot point bolted to the sub frame may have become loose, this is pretty simply to tighten up, there is also a bush there which could have worn.
Otherwise worn joints on the linkages.

Every car I've had has been loose initially. There is a ball joint that mounts said L shaped lever to the subframe. This is bolted to the subframe and comes undone resulting in particularly sloppy gearstick. 10 minute job to fix once you find it...

Cheers chaps.

I've had a dig around the 205gtidrivers forums and the subject only comes up about once every week. I guess I'm going to spend 10 minutes tightening my nuts Only difficulty now is getting under the bugger to find these holes.

Can't quite remember the size socket you need, but you'll need a socket and extension to tighten from under and through the subframe with a spanner above to hold in place.
