I'm going to look at a 16v S1 rallye later today so thought I'd better see what insurance was like before I take the plunge.

I can get insured on a standard S1 for £500 and a 106 GTi is not much more at £700, but the cheapest I've got so far for the 16v is £1600!

One mention of the words 'engine conversion' and 'uprated suspension' and all the insurers seem to start doubling things.

Can anyone recomend a decent insurer for modified frenchies? Or a few tips on getting lower quotes? The only way I can see of getting around it is by telling porkie pies but I don't want to do that.

I've been asking for TPFT, I'm now wondering wether fully comp with a big excess would actually be cheaper?

Spoken to HIC who deal through flux and they gave me the £1600 quote. I've decided it will be cheaper to insure it as a second car and have a fairly low milage limit. The chap who is selling it is the same age as me (21) and has it covered with HIC for £500 on 5k a year including trackday cover.

Might give tesco's and direct line a call but there seems to be a big difference between a modified car with standard engine and a car thats had a different engine put in!

An update- i managed to get quotes from both HIC and Adrian Flux and then used them to beat each other down on price until I got their very best prices. Strangely I then went for the slightly more expensive (HIC) policy because they we're much quicker on the phones and a far nicer bunch to talk to!

End result was £980 and £100 excess TPF&T (Flux offered £911 and £250 excess)
Thats a considerable saving on the original quote of £1600 so I'm quite happy.

And the upshot of this is I've bought the car I was looking at and will be picking it up tomorro night! A lovely cherry red 16v S1 Rallye. I'll put some pics and spec up in readers cars when I've stopped driving it around (probably some time next month then!)
