Every year for the last three years my 405 has come back from it's MOT with the same note on the form, "slight wear in front suspension" it's still passed the test though. Over a rough road the front end does make a racket and my better half now says she's going to start wearing earplugs if she has to sit in it. I assume that the bushes and ball joints need sorting out, is it a job I could do myself or something best left to a specialist?

I have never owned a 405, but replacing the front ball joints on a 205 and 306 is a pretty simple job. I'd say have a go at doing it yourself.

If your not at the confidence level to just dive in then take it back to the MOT station and get them to put it up on the ramp and show you just what needs replacing as it may only be one bush. If the guy is receptive, and not just trying to get the work, he may well explain to you how to do the job. While he's there get a quote as this may also give you a clue as to how long it's going to take him to do.

Could be the drop links between suspension and anti-roll bar? I replaced mine on my Citroen C5 after the garage quoted £110 for the job. Parts only cost about £20 and about 40 minutes fitting for each side. Apparently these wear pretty quickly on the C5 and the 406 which share the same part. Not sure if the 405 has a similar setup though! Mine was the same, making clonking sounds over rough surfaces.

Thanks guys, the arb bushes look easy enough for me to have a crack at, I'll try them first and see if it makes any difference.

If you are going to do them buy the alloy spacer tubes as well that are shaped and fit along side the bushes. They corrode so badly they fall apart.

Id say its deff the droplinks. All Pugs around that time go through them very quickly. Even quicker if you drive quickly and have lowered the car.

Small price to pay for sublime handling in my opinion though
