My mother is thinking of selling her 1990 205 1.6 GTI. She's owned it from new and it's now got 59k on the clock with full history and all MOTs etc. The question is how much do you think she should ask for it?

Well just GTi's are asking £3k for clean examples, not that i trust them..
But if your mothers is in exceptional condition with the miles that are on it i would expect to see at least £2k for it, maybe £2.5k, someone who wants a nice one enough will pay for it.

I agree with Mikey G. They are becoming classic cars and the right car for the right person will fetch a premium. Some cars are going for stupid money on Ebay at the moment (a topic I am versed in as ive just spent 5 months looking for the right laser green gti ).

59K miles is VERY low for a GTI these days, especially a 1990. If it has a FSH then you are laughing. I'd stick it up for £2750 and let them knock you down a wee bit to £2500 :P

A full MOT and Tax for a year and you can ask for the whole amount.

Good luck, not that you will need it :P

Scott.

i suspect people in the know, would not be wanting to pay more than £1k for it to be honest.

If it is a non sunroof version that may be worth an extra £150

Roughly £1200, more for a non-sunroof.

Have to agree with the last two posts, if you put it up for £2750 you will be very very lucky to get anyone even looking at it at that price. If you look around carefully there are always good cars about at £1k upwards.

People who are into 205's though will perhaps be stingier than your average buyer but even so about £1300-1500 is what I would say.

We all know you 205 drivers are tight

I still recon that if this is the dream 1 lady owner low mileage 205 in original excellent condition its gonna go for much more than a grand.

Ben, yours should be worth £50 quid more now youve washed it hehe

Thanks for the ideas on price everyone. We thought it might only be worth £1000, but I thought it was worth doing some research first. £1500 seems sensible and anything over £2k would be fantastic.

The car is a non-sunroof model. It sounds like that is more desirable. Why? The condition is very good for a 17 year old car. It has always been garaged, but the alloys have seen better days. There are also a couple of spots of rust, one on each door sill, near the b-pillar. Is this common?

Non sunroof = motorsport shell

yep wether its got 59k or 200k on it, theres a very high chance a non sunny will end up with a roll cage and a new engine to be thrashed around circuits and or hillclimbs and sprints around the country...

well for a brief period it was 0.01 seconds quicker to 60 too Its dirty again now though, still working up the effort to wash it again!

I'd never heard of the non-sunroof model being more desirable to the point people pay more money for it. Why is it not possible a roll cage could be put in a sunroofed 205? And is that the only reason people want one, or is there something to do with a stiffer chassis? (which I can't imagine as it's not a convertable where the top of the windscreen isn't joined to the rear windscreen) Just interested as mine has a sunroof, which i'm bloody greatful for, especially now it's hot, and can't see the point in paying extra for less comfort.

ive never seen figures but there are strong arguements for non sunroofers having a stiffer shell and thus less body flex. I used to think sunroofs were great. That was until some part of the lock mechanism has jammed and the seal started to leak, now its just bloody irritating!

The main problem with the sunroof is having weight in the wrong place. The roof skins aren't really structual, they're only attached by a few spot welds and some filler.

They do seem to fetch more money with no sunroof, especially if being sold as a rolling shell.

i think the non-sunroof thing has evolved on various forums over the years.
The non-sunroof models are basically rarer as almost most were sold with the optional sunroof.
Less complicated to fit a cage into, more headroom also.

Also a greater chance of it being stolen it seems, some theives went to great lenghths to get at a friends 205 GTi (non sunroof model) when there was a few identical but sunroof'd models in the area in a somewhat less secure enviroment. It wouldn't suprise me if that shell is been cornerd on it's doors at a track somewhere in the country
