pug 205 1.9 gti
Discussion
Hi,
I have a ltd edition sorrento green 1.9 gti, the engine code says "D6A" I've searched for this and it comes back as a citroen BX19 gti engine. I just cannot seem to get the engine to run smoothly...
- It takes ages to start
- Very sluggish pulling off, can begin to lose power in low gears! (as if missing)
- Feels like a flat spot
- Generally running roughly
- heaters also not working, but temp gauge is fine- just had a new thermstat and head - gasket
So far I have:
* changed ECU- tried 3 different ones up to now!
* new spark plugs & leads
* tried 3 different coils
* just had the tuning done
* running on high octane
* new ignition module
* tried various air flow meters
* new fuel filter
I was thinking of changing the ETC sensor, fuel injectors, fuel pump and throttle sensor but dont even know which to try first!
The only thing that seems to be wrong is the timng belt has been fitted the wrong way around (arrows on belt not spinning in right direction- thanks for spotting this, Mike!)
I think I've tried just about everything and am at my wits end!! Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to get my pug running smoothly?
Many Thanks!

So did you check that cam timing? Like i said the belt the wrong way around shouldnt make a difference but if they missed the arrows what else did they do wrong when timing it?
It seems to idle very un pug like (too smooth) and responds too well to small throttle inputs, but is breathless at the top end which makes me think the timing is out.

Im having the timing checked and belt put back on properly tomorrow evening, hopefully that'll sort it out, if not I have no idea what to try next!
Do you think lack of heating could be down to the ETC sensor?
Have you ever heard of a D6A pug engine, as mine is and is coming back as a citroen BX19 gti, could I be using the wrong ECU as I've tried a couple for the peugeot engine and they all seem the same!
How is Stu's car coming along?
Cheers Mike

D6A is still an XU9 engine. Wiring should be the same as well as the ecu. It comes up in my 405 book as an 87 on engine. It does mention some engines were low compression but which ones i dont know.
As for the heating i dont know, engine seemed to warm up ok when i saw it.
Stu's is coming along slowly, need to put the wiring in soon

Just found a little more, D6A engine was slightly detuned from the GTi engines and makes around 125bhp, with torque lower down, Compression is still up though.
Could be why it is so responsive at low revs yet nothing higher up, and so the GTi ecu isnt running it right either. Aparently the main difference is the cams and a little head work. Could be worth taking the cam cover off and comparing it to a GTi one you may have lying around.

The D6A engine is the BX1.9GTI engine - has a different pleneum chamber very similar to the Mi16 and as mentioned knocks out 125bhp but slightly more torque.
Are you using the correct ECU?
How much water are you losing?
Is this on a red GTI by any chance?

No, he's local to me. I took a look at the car the other week, they did some recent work to it but I cant remember if it was the head or something else he changed due to a problem with it.
He has a number of GTi parts but looks like they are the wrong ECU for this engine. It is fitted with GTi manifolds so the plenums are the same.
If this is the lower spec engine it could be why it ticks over better than any GTi i have seen, it is very responsive when making small throttle movements but it seems breathless when pushing hard and doesnt want to rev to the limit like a GTi. I run my wideband lambda in the tail and the fueling looked good.
Will have to take another look at it.
