106 Gti / VTS engine into a 306?
Discussion
I wonder?
I'm getting a bit bored with the VTR boys running rings aroung the old girl (1999 306, 90bhp 1.6 8v TU engine) so what im thinking is will a 120bhp Saxo VTS / 106 Gti 16v engine drop in? Is this engine a TU engine, like the 1.6 and 1.4s?
Is there a better option?
Any ideas or advice welcome

Just get a 306 2.0 XSi. They are dirt cheap, insurance isn't bad (less than a vts/106 gti, definitely less than your call will be if you modify it) and they don't look too special so you will take all the vtr boys by surprise.
A 306 with the vts engine would probably struggle to keep up with a vtr anyway. They are nearly 200kg heavier so 20 hp won't make much difference.
Of course you could just stop trying to race the barry boys instead. would be much cheaper!

Hmm i like it. Problem is im only 17, so insurance is the overriding factor of everything. Ill go have a look at some quotes for XSis then...
Cheers

cant see how a heavily modified 306 is gonna be cheaper than a std fast 306 from the factory?
The faster car is built for the extra power, you put a more powerful engine into a car with suspension and brakes designed for less could be classed as dangerous. Just putting a bigger engine in wouldnt make it heavily modified, just faster.
My brother has a 306 XSi, fantastic car and he's owned it for 3 years now with very few problems. Insurance was reasonable when he first got it as its classed as a watered down GTi.
At 17 you wont get a quick car with low insurance costs unless you get very lucky with a classic or kit-car of some sort - just something you have to deal with and be patient.
For what they are, 306 XSI's are very good and insurance might not be too bad.
Fitting the 106GTi engine in a 306 will probably mean your policy would be based on a 106GTI (that's how it often works with engine transplants). Not worth the hassle.
