I pick up my 306 D Turbo (97P) on Thrusday and have noticed it seems to have a very sensitive fuel gauge.

Anytime i go round a corner, or even a bend in the road, the gauge is all over the place and can move by upto 1/4 of a tank. It also seems to bounce around on a bumpyish road too.....is this normal or could my gauge be dodgy?

I had an H reg Rover 214SLi that used to do that.
The 270 degree turn on the exit from Basingstoke town centre
towards the M3 used to make it stall if I had anything less
than a quarter of a tank of petrol - the gauge would drop to
empty as well.
If I dipped the clutch I could get back on the straight and
was able to start the car again.

The issue was there were no, or maybe not big enough baffles in
the fuel tank to stop the petrol slopping around and away from
the fuel pipe.

Maybe the Pug has a similar design flaw????

I have the same model and year and the gauge is rock steady. It's down the breakers for you.

I have a funny fealing this si due to fuel tank shape. If the 306 is anything like the 205 and 309 then the tank is wide and thin with a lump in the middle to clear the exhaust. As a result a low tank may only have a inch of fuel in the bottom and a corner one way or the other ends up with much of the fuel stuck the wrong side of the lump in the tank. Hence the needle is all over the place when not much fuel left.

The dampening is in the gauge so I suspect that is what you want.

it doesn't even when the tank is 3/4 full. am abit worried that if it's low on fuel and i take a corner a little too sharply (or round the car parks in work) it'll end up not taking any fuel into the engine an cut out

Haynes seems to make fairly light work of it. Remove column shrouds. release column mount bolts so it drops a bit. 5 screws hold the dash in. pull forward to undo connectors and speedo cable. then it can be dismantled to get at the gauge.

an theres the problem...cant get the shroud of my steering coloum. Can see there is 1 bolt of some sort in there, but cant actually seem to find anything to fit it, or feel it when trying to locate it.....think it may be a scraper job for a new shroud and break the old one off

Haynes says 'working through the holes in the lower shroud release the 2nuts and washers. on later models without access holes remove the 3 screws securing the lower shroud.'
