Hi Folks,

I have just encountered problems with my speedo flicking up and down and occasionally working fine or not at all.

Have taken it to a Renault Specialist who think that it is the speedo head as there is a signal from the gearbox sensor although this did weaken.

I have been given the options of fitting a second hand speedo unit showing 75,000 mls or ordering a new one from France with 0 mls.

I would be most grateful if anyone has any advice as the car is very original and only has approx 54,000mls on it and I would not be happy with a different mileage shown. Can the unit be dismantled legally to retain the mileage or do you have to have an entire new unit?

Many thanks.

Look at the sensor first, then the 3 pin plug (usually clipped to the bulkhead / inner wing near the airbox. Also check the earths under the plastic square cover in the passenger footwell.

If that gives no joy get one off Ebay to check or borrow one off a mate.

Seems to be a common problem. The previous owner of my old car had trouble with his, when i took the engine out (it was blown when i bought it) i found the sensor wasnt in the hole correctly so when i put it all back together i made sure it was. The speedo started working a little better but was now only reading about 2 thirds what it should have been irked

I sold it after i fixed the engine so didnt get to solve the problem fully.

Have you got a turbo heatshield? Could have easily toasted the wiring.

Thanks for the replies,

The sensor on the gearbox seems difficult to get at could not see it, followed the wire from behind the airbox after checking the 3 point plug. Have not fully checked the earth connector in the passenger footwell yet.

Have seen a similar mileage instrument panel on e-bay a put a bid in, just to check, cheaper and more original than the £280-00 Renault want for a a new one.

Turbo heatsheild all intact, wires show no sign of being frazzled.

Any ideas how much the sensor on the gearbox costs?
