I'm currently toying with a number of motoring ideas, one of which involves some upgrades to my 205. Since my skills with a spanner start and end with hitting things and hoping it works, I'm not in a position to take on engine transplant project, so have been looking around at what chequebook build options are available.
Does anyone have any experience of these folks:

I fancy a GTI-6 conversion (amongst other things!) Feel free to PM me through my profile if necessary.

Yes don't go there!
pm Miles on 205GTIdrivers - he did mine and a whole host of others. Top quality workmanship, real nice chap with years of 205 experience.
Based around Southampton / New Forest area too.

What are you planning on doing with the car when you finished because there are a few that race in the Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship and that has a ten year age limit that runs out at the end of 2008, so if you can wait you could get a race prepared one for a good price, maybe!
And even if you did want to use it on the road it wouldn't take much to get a Combe Saloon road legal again!

Just out of curiousity how much does an engine swap cost for a 205?
Presumably a fair bit if going to a Mi16 due to the additional work involved?
If had a 1.6gti would upgrading to a 1.9gti be a fairly (price) reasonable option? I see 1.9gti engines are changing hands on ebay for reasonable sums.
Thanks.

If your 1.6 engine is in good nick putting a re-worked head on it would be the cheapest option for a decent boost in performance.
To change to a Mi16 is not much more work than a straight swap for another 1.6 or 1.9 motor. Depending on who does it around £1500 should get you a re-con engine fitted.
Oddly a factory Mi16 engined 205 can be cheaper to insure than a tuned 1.9 8v even though the 16v is going to be faster (with a few exceptions). I never have got my head around this but have come across it a few times on 205GtiDrivers.
1.6 to 1.9 swap is a piece of pi**, not much more work than a replacement 1.6 engine. Mi swap is more work but not an enormous job and is a well trodden path. Also to consider is a 2.0 16v swap, e.g. GTi6 or S16. Heavier engine but more torque and don't seem to suffer from oil surge like the Mi16s (more a an issue on the track than the road).
Rob
P.S. £ for bhp tuning an 8v isn't the way to go, on the other hand I drive one and love every minute!

As Rob says somethimes the Mi16 swap can often make youe premium less. Mine remained identical.
Reason being the 405Mi16 was actually originally in a lower insurance group than 205GTI so when they ask what car the donor engine came from they take this into consideration.
Funny that declaring an aftermarket exhaust system adds nothing to your power output but around 30 to your premium and an Mi16 engine an additional 30 odd bhp makes no difference.

Another good word for Miles off 205drivers and his Pug Racing company. He sorted the suspension out on my 106GTi for me. Top bloke, no problems with the work he did at all, and he did me a very good price - and even delivered my car back up to my house in the evening for me. Well recommended.

www.ladmotorsport.co.uk they will sort your 205 and you get a full warranty so you can have some peice off mind. they did an a1 job on my 205 it is like a rocket i let a golf vr6 eat dust at the wkend vevala205
you would'nt happen to work for LAD would you?
I think if someone is happy with LAD we shouldn't all assume it's dodgy, but rather that they can give good customer service.
I remain highly dubious about their claim to get 160BHP out of your 1.9 engine, and would love to see a before and after graph on an independant rolling road, but wouldn't want to spend my money finding out!
