my beloved 205 has a few problems!
Discussion
Hello all!
Can anyone shed some light on 2 concerns I have with my 205 Gti 1.9?
No 1 Water is getting in and accumulating in the footwell behind the passenger seat from no obvious route
No 2 Starting to be tempermental when it comes to starting turning over fine but just not going, but other times it starts first time, has recently had new battery, new plugs/leads and starter motor.Any ideas?
Happy new year to you all and I look forward to speaking on pistonheads throughout 2007,any advice/guidance will be very appreciated.
Regards Rob

1. As mentioned rear window seals. These shrink and let water in behind the trim. If you lift up the seat and carpet you'll probably find a patch of rust in the lowest section and also rust where it trickles down into the footwell.
2. Almost certainly 'either' the plastic terminal on the starter motor has corroded, cut off and reterminate with a new. The brown multiplug (situated around and under the distributor) is dirty, cleaning this can sort a lot of things. You could also clean up the earth straps.

Sorry to hijack guys but have been having some 205 electrical problems of late. Anyone have any idea of the location of the major earth straps on a 205? mines an XS with the TU variant engine if that helps.

It is normally bolted to the gearbox. The battery earth lead is normally split into 2, one goes onto the chassis normally quite close to the battery and the other is slightly thicker and goes down to the gearbox. Some cars though ive seen run one earth lead direct to the chassis and then a braided earth lead from the gearbox to a chassis point quite close to the gearbox mount. Either way it should be visible from the top between the battery and engine.
Where from? cant find any listed on GSF
Also, seems other people have the same problem: http://groups.google.co.uk/group/alt.

This is such a common problem, your dizzy will be fine.
Re-terminate the starter motor cable as I mentioned earlier - this will take 5min & will cost you 10p.
Always start with the cheap things
