The 1.1 litres of pure French muscle is slowly reaching the end of its life and I'm considering putting a larger engine in it.

Talking to a friend he suggested getting a GTI engine and running it on the same gearbox, as although the top speed would only be 100 still it would get there pdq!
Only real problem with this is whether the transmission would be man enough for the job, but there's only one real way to find out.

I vaguely recall someone putting an M-16 engine into one but can't find any information on it.

Ideally i'd like something that would drop in quite easily without having to remove bits of inner wing and bulkhead.

Suggestions/advice please...

As already mentioned, fork out for the faster car rather than converting such a model. Remember you'll be uprating the brakes and suspension before you know it too so start off with a better base.
Insurance will probably also be more due to modified car status.

106XSI is also a good starting point.

Hmm yes I have been looking at the Rallye and Xsi.

I'll have a think, it will be a lot less hassle to buy a higher spec model.
